Dan and I have been slowly wending our way through the Best Actor category and Best Production in a Limited Series for the 2017 Emmys. I wanted to see the competition that BC and The Lying Detective have a this year's Emmys.
So far, as well as BC in the Lying Detective, we have seen E. McGregor in Fargo, and now we watched The Wizard of Lies last night and both of us really liked it a lot. Actually it was amazing. And De Niro was fantastic in the role. He played it perfectly, letting the sociopathic personality of B. Madoff come through in a very subtle way, almost imperceptibly (but the final scene of Madoff with the reporter clinches it IMO as to how pitch perfect De Niro was with exposing this character's motivations). Michelle P was pretty good too as Madoff's wife. Truly a remarkable production and B. Levinson's direction was very deft and assured.
Really entertaining.
Tonight we started Genuis to see Geoffrey Rush in action and so far (we have seen 3 episodes today) it is fascinating (although we have seen far more of Johnny Flynn as the young Einstein than Rush).

We finished Genius, which we enjoyed very much and have moved on to The Night Of.
It is a mini-series consisting of 8 parts and tonight we watched the first Episode callled The Beach.
This series had me hooked into it from the first of the opening credits.
Really, really liked it. The young fellow (Riz Ahmed) who play Naz was fantastic. John Turturro plays his lawyer has just been introduced and is also excellent. Both have been nominated for Best actor in a limited series for this year's Emmys. Can't wait until the next episode.

I haven't watched it but I remember that after The Current War was officially announced I checked IMDb for the recent works as producer by Steve Zaillian (who is an excellent scriptwriter) and it was there. He is also one of the creator of the series.

Yeah I've seen it. It's good. Though a bit of a letdown from the middle through end. Bad acting by the actress who play the lawyer kinda ruin it. And being a hater of foots it did take out a bit of enjoyment watching John Turturros's character's ordeal.

If I have to pick who should get the award between Ahmed and Turturro, it's Turturro.

I watched The Night Of when it first aired and thought it was great. I still think it's the series to beat for the Emmys if one cares about the competition.
I was first drawn to it because of John Turturro and Michael Kenneth Williams, who were both fantastic. The acting was great all round with a brilliant star turn by Riz Ahmed. He and Turturro were both nominated for best actor, so they may cancel each other out. I was happy that MKW was nominated for best supporting actor. I remember Bill camp as a stand out, as well.
The script was excellent, too. I read somewhere that TNO is based on a British mini-series. Have any of you seen it?
Steve Zaillian is a real powerhouse - a brilliant scriptwriter and producer with a zillion projects in the works. He has directed, as well. I strongly recommend A Civil Action, starring John Travolta with Robert Duvall with an amazing supporting cast. I think it's my favorite role of Travolta's. I was very excited about Zaillian's connection to TCW. He sounds like a good person to know for future projects.

I started to mention the controversy surrounding the depiction of the young female lawyer, as well. Did you mean bad acting by her or by the actress playing the DA. The DA was odd, but I didn't think either of them were bad. Frankly, I almost didn't watch it because I thought the whole premise of the wild young woman picking up cab drivers was sort of silly, but I got past it.

Oh yes I mean the young assistant DA. I think with better actress her storyline would add nuance to the whole story. As it was, imo that actress didn't deliver.

Well, I don't think any of the actors were disappointing in it. And I am excited that Zaillian is associated with TCW. I thought this series was a powerful presentation. Some of the shots in this series were such of an unusual nature that I just was in awe of the choices made. Like tonight the scene shot through the dirty partially broken glass of the prison guard room as Naz hugs his father after being set free . It was so heart-wrenching and yet distanced because of the way that the actors were placed in the far corner of the screen and blurred through the glass. Remarkable. I just couldn't choose between RA and JT for this series - both were outstanding IMO. As were the other members of the cast - Michael K. Williams, Bill Camp and Jeannie Berlin especially. Really really enjoyed all the Best Actor limited series presentations. Seeking out the nominations really helped me see some excellent programming. I hope BC wins for TLD but if any of the other nominees wins I won't mind at all - they all deserve recognition for the work they have done. Now we are going to hopefully move onto the Outstanding Made for TV Movie category. We have already seen Sherlock: The Lying Detective and Wizard of Lies. I hope to see The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks next. I think I will pass on the Dolly Parton one (it just doesn't seem like something in my wheelhouse frankly) and I see that the last one San Junipero is one from a series that I have never watched. Question to those who have watched it - would I find it confusing to see this if I have never watched any of the others in the series? Can it stand alone or do I need the background (for characters, etc.) to understand the plot? I don't think I would fully appreciate the Sherlock episode if I had never seen any of the others. :-))
