Right. Worst case scenario, it's another TFE. A little rougher this time, since he is better known now and people will associate the film with him more, but certainly TFE didn't damage his career any. It helps that the complaints aren't about BC's performance, at all. I wouldn't want to be the director or writer of this one right now, though.

I felt like I couldn't tell anything about the movie, unless it was going to be a music video about Thomas Edison, LOL. I actually loved the trailer for precisely that reason lol. It was a first trailer, so I didn't expect it to reveal anything. And I quite like the visual "music video" style - unless it persist throughout an entire feature film with no substance at all. Which is kind of the feeling I'm getting here. I think the "perfume add" mention made me think of the movie "Perfume" (the one with Ben Whishaw) which I found to be absolutely empty of any feeling, full on style over substance, but very beautifully shot. It's normally the first movie I think of when someone mentions a film being showy but without story. I doubt TCW will be as bad, I'm still interested in seeing it because I liked the trailer and of course the cast is great. The mention of Hoult/Tesla fitting better in The Prestige... I love The Prestige and Bowie's Tesla in it. Too bad it's out of place.

I cringed at that "perfume ad" comment because that's a phrase I often use to describe a glitzy, hollow, manipulative, cliched style that I hate.
As for the trailer, It seemed very heavy-handed to me - bumper sticker filmmaking. Very, very broad strokes. Surely that style won't permeate the entire movie. That's what I meant when I said I couldn't tell anything about what kind of movie it would be.

I don't know why all these people are so focused on the Oscar race! Why can't they mke a proper review?

I'm here! I am so tired that I was going to wait until tomorrow before writing anything.
For now, I'll come right out and say that I didn't meet him. Sorry! I was there at the red carpet for 2 1/2 hours, but Benedict arrived so late that I couldn't wait anymore because I had to get in line for the movie. I'm not even sure he would have made it all the way down to where I was standing. In 2014, he spent about 45 minutes meeting fans, but it was probably only 15 or 20 minutes this time. But it was a great evening anyway! More about that tomorrow!
I've been reading the reviews you've been posting. I like this from The Wrap:
I think I agree with this! It tries to do something different and unexpected and I think it has a lot more going for it than these reviews are saying.
Oh yes - about the idiot that said people walked out: nobody walked out. The movie ended, the audience applauded, then the lights came on as the credits rolled. A few people left, but most of us stayed in our seats. The cast and crew, who were all in the audience watching the movie with us (more about that tomorrow!) made their way backstage, and the the moderator went up to the microphone and started speaking. Anyone who was standing or heading for the doors returned to their seats. JUST LIKE AT EVERY OTHER MOVIE! When I went to the Pride premiere, the Q & A portion began immediately after the film, and a few people walked out while Andrew Scott was speaking! By the way, while we were waiting for the George Clooney movie to end, the doors opened at one point and about 25 people emerged. I figured that the movie was over, but it was half an hour later when the rest of the audience came out. Obviously, those first 25 left during the credits. I wonder if there were any snarky remarks about that on Twitter? Probably not.
I liked it. It does have the look and feel of the trailer we've seen. I found it fascinating and gorgeous to watch, and yes there were lovely magical moments. I'm still thinking about it - which is a good sign! I don't want to spoil it by giving too much away, so if anyone has a specific question about it, I'll answer it and hide it as a spoiler.
But I'm off to sleep now! I had such a hard time finding a taxi after the movie that I just kept walking - and eventually reached my hotel! So I'm exhausted, but I'll tell you more after I get home tomorrow. And I took some blurry pictures and videos that I can post!
One more thing I forgot to mention! Before the movie began, someone on stage (the director, maybe?) said not to be surprised if some of the scenes look different when the movie comes out. So they're still working on it.

Glad you liked it mllemass! I don't think there's anything weird about leaving during the credits. Like I imagine some people go to TIFF just for the movies, and they may be on a tight schedule with one movie starting not long after another ends.

Frankly, I didn't say anything at the time because people here loved it, but I was quite taken aback by the trailer. I felt like I couldn't tell anything about the movie, unless it was going to be a music video about Thomas Edison, LOL. Well, I said it too: I am sure B. is wonderful, he always is, but really much depends on the script and the director and the trailer didn't give me any vibe of rhytm or in-depth psychology. Of course, I am still going to watch it.
