I have a random question for those Britishers amongst us. Do you know what a priest hole is, and do people over there commonly know about them? I’m writing a piece of fiction and it’s for a plot point. Thanks!

So...no responses means no one has ever heard of a priest hole? Or everyone has and therefore didn’t respond? 🤔

I didn’t respond because I am not British (and I thought you were asking for only Brits to reply). I had to google it (but I did and thanks to you I now know what they are! 😄). I do know a bit about British culture and I had never heard of them, if that helps you with your story writing.
:-))

Yes! Thank you! I’d never heard of them either, and I wondered how common they were in general knowledge. Maybe I should have left the Brit part off.
In my story, a stolen item from a church is hidden in a priest hole and Molly has to figure it out. I’m curious if she would automatically think of it, or whether that would go right over her head.

I’m writing a piece of fiction and it’s for a plot point. Thanks! I'd heard of them, but again I'm not British and my main source is the tv show Midsomer Murders. So I didn't answer either . Sorry! My mom loves that show, and likes when I watch it with her, so I've seen a lot of episodes (there's like 20 gazillion seasons. LOL). Anyway, there are at least a dozen episodes that feature someone or something hiding in a priest hole, often a murderer uses one to get away with murder in some big manor house, other times, someone hides in one to escape and peeks out to witness someone else's murder. So it seems like something people would be aware of, even if it's not on the top of their mind. (sort of like Underground Railroad hiding places here in the US, used by abolishionists to hide runaway slaves in the 1800's).

It's on Netflix, so I've binge-watched all 20 gazillion seasons! It's hilarious to see how the fashions and cell phones on the show changed over the years. I think just about every British actor (except Benedict) has made an appearance on it at some point. I looked up Priest Holes in England on Wikipedia: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Priest_hole

Right now my mom is staying with my sister who doesn't have Netflix and my mom keeps mentioning in emails how much she misses watching Barnaby. . And yes about the British actors. I don't know how BC dodged it. His parents have been on, and half the cast of Sherlock (Una Stubbs, Mark Gatiss etc) and some of his costars from other things. You're so right about the fashions and phones, plus we love to spot actors in little roles - Orlando Bloom, Henry Cavill - hey mom, that guy that just got murdered, he's Superman now!
