Some people go through IVF treatment, others just buy pillows/robo kids. I hope they she's lucky although I don't understand why they don't adopt. Perhaps it's not easy.

Why would they have a rule like that? If she's around Benedict's age, I think that's when people start considering adoption.
I'm thinking of my own relatives here. My cousin and her husband were married 15 years before they adopted. We had no idea that they had been trying to get pregnant for all those years! And another cousin and his wife tried IVF unsuccessfully many times before they decided to adopt. He was 33 and she was 40.

I’m not sure if it’s an official rule but I know that couples in the 40ish bracket can find it difficult to be accepted as adoptive parents of babies in the UK. It’s easier if they’re prepared to accept an older child.

I don't know about the UK, but rules vary in the US. For example, when my husband and I adopted, the rule of the agency we went through was that the sum of your ages could not exceed 90. So, you could both be 45, or one could be 30 and one 60, etc. They placed only newborns. However, if you want to adopt an older child through the Foster Care system, or a special needs child, the requirements are not as strict.

I think the fact there are very few newborns available for adoption in the U.K. makes it very difficult for anybody to adopt a baby and can, albeit unofficially, skew decisions in favour of younger couples.

They did break up a long time ago and the kid issue might still have been true at the time. Or, there were tensions b/c that was when Sherlock was catching on and his career was skyrocketing. Anyway, they both landed safely so that’s nice. ☺️
