I don't follow Martin Freeman but I haven't seen anything on twitter about him or his partner. I searched and can't find anything about him or his girlfriend anywhere.
I don't think it's Freeman's exposure on social media that help create haters' sites (I personally didn't heard of anyone), it's probably the same unhinged people who hate their faves have a girlfriend and isn't available anymore (though it never was for them) or is straight and not gay as he should be.
Part of the Timothée Chalamet followers are now hating on him. It seems he's not the gay person they imagined he was. As with BC, the responsible for not being what they thought he was is Chalamet and not them.
That happens with lots of actors, singers.
"So from where I sit, having a twitter or Instagram page doesn't stop any of the tin-hatters at all" you say. I say "Not having a twitter or Instagram page doesn't stop any of the tin-hatters at all" . BC's case is an example. But, I never said he should have an accoount to stop the haters. The haters shoud be ignored and blocked. He should have one to communicate news of his projects, for instance perhaps Patrick Melrose wouldn't have been so overlooked if he were tweeting about it, posting some bts pictures, a video of his current work, nothing too intrusive.

I think it depends how it’s managed. I imagine people like, I don’t know, Robert Downey Jr. surely have professional people behind their social media even when it seems like it is just him. I have never heard any complaint about what he posts which seems it’s just silly things, charity and publicity. I don’t think Mark Ruffalo has! He have had a few “missteps” mainly for political reasons. The same with Chris Evans. BC is also a very politically opinionated person (someone who almost can’t control himself to give an opinion even when he tries and says he won’t do it, according to interviews) so if it really would be him then I can imagine him getting in trouble for it.
About the “crazies”, I was amazed with what happened with the Jonas brother and his Bollywood wife (I don’t remember the name of any of them!). A “professional” writing conspiracy theories about their wedding is another level of craziness. I doubt any real journalist would had dared to touch BC and SH’s own crazies theories when they were a thing. I don’t know but maybe it was related to the fact that there wasn’t any real interest on their private life after they actually didn’t shared almost anything with the press and public. Entertaining the “theory” that it was a sham sounded ridiculous considering they don’t wanted to be seen! Their wedding was a big event for the press but they couldn’t even take a good image of them!; It was still ridiculous with the other two but they were opening the door to everyone when they shared their love on social media! There were photos everywhere! I don’t know exactly who they are but I swear I saw them marrying on local news! It was easy (although very stupid) for a formal publication to think people would believe there was something weird with them. I’m not blaming them, of course, the responsibility is of the writer herself and her publication, but I think that was another example of a “con” of sharing something private on social media.
Also I’m not sure most people know about “the crazies”. I think they are much more insignificant of what they think. We know they exist because we are here but the rest of the world, I doubt.
Another extra problem for BC’s case is that I don’t think every celebrity is treated the same. There is a huge fascination with BC by press, fans and even general public. The attention he received after Sherlock was, IMHO, much bigger and crazier than Martin Freeman’s. Everything he said or did was scrutinized until madness! And he is single out about everything: he *is* the “posh actor” even when he isn’t actually *that* posh compared to other actors; he is “the* Remainer luvvie even when he signed that letter with other 100 hundred artists; he “is” the pro-Refugee celebrity per excellence even when the other “usual suspects” are more vocal and single-minded about the theme compared to him (Yes, he said ‘fuck the politicians” and that was extreme! But I think in general he is more discreet and moderate compared to Bob Geldof or Lili Allen. They are consciously dedicating a lot of time to social issues when BC tries to not talk too much about politics because he is firstly an actor but miserably failing at it).
