Gary Oldman told a story once about how he sang this song onstage many years ago. He was still young and inexperienced, and he started singing the song an octave too high! This song keeps going up and up, and by the time he had to hit the high notes he was red in the face, veins popping out all over, broke out in a sweat, and yet he was supposed to look like this sweet faced lad. 😂

But yes, it’s more powerful and disturbing when it’s just a sweet faced lad accompanied by other innocent looking kids!

@sgev: I've seen it on stage and yes the story is great and terrifying. And I have seen the movie - I think it is a masterful stage play and for me that's what I prefer.
Too bad they didn't film one of the many stage productions like they do with National Theatre Live performances like Hamlet or Frankenstein. Those I heartily agree are excellent on film. A real stage experience!

That scene in Cabaret is truly chilling and really gives you the feeling of the mood of the time in Germany.
