Oh, dear! That fellow (who supposedly has seen the script) wasn't too complimentary of the part, was he? At least on paper, he said it was very odd basically. And I take it he isn't an aficionado of The Batch. I have seen BC take a potentially very unsympathetic role and create empathy for that character to a degree (I'm thinking of RIII in particular and Khan too), so we shall see... :-))

This is why I almost dread BC doing "serious" movies. Because before he's even turned up on set the "will he get an Oscar?" buzz starts? This may be something to do with my general antipathy towards awards though. I reckon they're nothing but a marketing exercise.

You can't judge a movie or actors solely by the script. That guy who has read the script also compares it to the Founder, but Benedict is not Michael Keaton! And I believe that he can play an eccentric character without imitating Johnny Depp.

This may be something to do with my general antipathy towards awards though. I reckon they're nothing but a marketing exercise. But buzz has nothing to do with performance and we know BC doesn't approach roles with awards in mind, so why dread him taking on serious films? (I know you said "almost" but indulge me for a moment) I love him doing movies that are taken seriously and if he is part of the buzz for awards (even though this is ridiculously early) I find at least, that it means he is considered within a certain echelon of actors which I think it at least a bit complimentary, wouldn't you say? I think it is better to be in this situation than be the type of actor who no-one takes seriously and is dismissed almost out of hand. It seems it is very hard for some actors to break out of a conceived niche where they are looked upon as "just a _________" (filling in the blank with words like "comedian", "singer", or "heart-throb" etc.). Once in a while some do break through to the "respectful" tier but it is a tough row to hoe, so to speak. I think high expectations of his future performances are kind of a result of his continued excellent track record and the respect for his very evident talent. That's a pretty lovely position to be in actually - granted it produces a pressure that has to be managed, but I think BC puts himself under that pressure every time he takes on a role too, so he probably can handle it. :-))

Because before he's even turned up on set the "will he get an Oscar?" buzz starts? I get that awards are important for a film from a financial and visibility standpoint (something like Moonlight, very good - very indie, gets a huge boost from award acclaim) but talking of Oscars like a film was simply made for just that purpose is so irritating. For some reason Benedict is seen by many as "thirsty", although imho he doesn't seem like that at all and even when he was nominated for an Oscar he was by no means everywhere "kissing babies" or however that trope goes. Sure he attended events, it would be disrespectful not to, but he didn't put his career on hold for a campaign like some actors do! But Oscar buzz is something that will automatically be applied to all Weinstein movies of certain type if they have even one actor who's seen as talented enough to win something. And HWC films are more likely to be seen as existing for acclaim, rather than acclaim existing for them. But in the end, if a film is good and enjoyable a film is good and enjoyable, and how it came to be is (mostly) irrelevant. I think TCW will be good, I wasn't that excited in the beginning because when it was announced BC still had that "biopic man" label, but I think he has gotten rid of that somewhat and TCW really doesn't even sound like a typical biopic the more we hear of it. So I'm pleased.

They generally hate BC on that forum. During the 2015 Oscar campaign I registered for a while and they just dismissed/attacked any comment favorable to TIG/BC because "cumberbitches". They have no problem with other actors stans except BC's, Jennifer Aniston's and may be JLaw. When I decided to delete the account I had to explain why I didn't want to be there anymore (bullying) and they tried to convince me to stay. I had to write 3 times for them to delete my account.

Reading that Awardswatch poll, wow, I didn't know there was a new Daniel Day-Lewis/Paul Thomas Anderson project on the way. The awards fanboys (at least the ones that used to be on IMDb's Movie Awards board - and I don't mean this as an insult to them) must be salivating over it! I personally find them both "overrated" (I know, blasphemy) in many ways - Boogie Nights is great but other than that I haven't been crazy over any PTA feature film, and DDL is technically great but he often leaves me cold.
Sorry OT.

Though Weinstein surely bought the rights because its awards' chances. I doubt the director or the actors care really about awards initially. One of the hates on TIG/BC is because of Weinstein's campaign: "Honor the man, honor the film".
