TBH I'm a little tired of all the recent hype. I like the guy but it's over the top! Also I am kind of worried of a backlash! Anyway this fluffy article by the great Stephanie Zacharek is actually very good and on point. Reeves is actually an actor that is not very respected by critics. He is better that what they give credit for but apart of him being very reserved maybe the fact that he is regularly ignored by the "connoisseurs" even when he is a popular star have helped him with his impeccable image. He has never being hyped before so he haven't suffered of any backlash...yet! time.com/5611378/keanu-reeves-popularity-toy-story-4/I remember the nasty comments when he dared to do Shakeaspeare. It didn't help that he still sounded as his Ted from Bill and Ted movies!

It didn't help that he still sounded as his Ted from Bill and Ted movies! [ He does come across sometimes as more of a vibe than an actor, and his often “less is more” approach to performances does allow a lot of room for people to read into his performances whatever they may, whether it’s depth, reserve, meaning or the flatness of a poor performance. His turn in KB’s Shakespeare was not good... but to be honest, I’d pin that on Branagh as much as Reeves. It’s the director’s job to guide their actors to a compelling performance, and if it’s falling flat, you take a step back and make a change (not necessarily recast, but realize you need to take a different approach to get a successful characterization that works in the piece). It was the same film that featured Michael Keaton’s Dogberry, which was, IMHO, a LOT. Reeves was very good and very funny in Always Be My Maybe (Netflix) playing off his image, and in his voiceover bit in Keanu too (a ridiculous movie that shouldn’t have worked but somehow did). I suspect he’s a good performer within his range, and is game to try different things and mock his own image, which wins him “good sport” points in my book.

Keanu Reeves is one of the few people involved in the movies that I just can't stand. I am NOT going to even call him an actor because he CAN'T ACT! Every time I have had the misfortune of seeing a movie with him in it he has always lived DOWN to my worst expectations of him as a performer. He dragged down The Lake House to the point of sheer tedium. He mumbled his way through Speed (although to be honest nothing could have saved that stinker). He made A Walk in the Clouds even MORE boring than I ever imagined! The only movie he was in that he didn't ruin was River's Edge and that was in 1986 and he basically was playing a sterotypical youth who wasn't a monster.
That being said he could very well be a very lovely person. I don't know because I am not interested in anything he has ever done in showbiz. The internet can have him as their "boyfriend"! I would rather focus on someone for their talent. KR has about as much acting talent as a wooden clog... in fact, come to think of it, I've seen some clogs with MORE emotive expression than him!

Those are the only movies I’ve ever seen him in - besides A Walk in the Clouds, which I’ve previously talked about as being terrible. I really liked Speed, but for Sandra Bullock. Anyone could have played KR’s part. And I really wanted to like The Lake House (I like time-travel stories!), but it just felt like it should have been much better.

Yes, he is an EXTREMELY subtle actor so not everyone likes him. He regularly is/was called wooden. I don't have a problem with his acting style, tho. He is charismatic enough but it's a little surprising how everyone seems suddenly infatuated with him just because he seems as a decent bloke! I mean it's great when good guys win but he has been hated for years by critics. It would be interesting to see if his new popularity with the Internet kids bring him some new appreciation with the moralistic new wave of American film critics (Will be Keving Spacey considered a bad actor in the future? Bad person= Bad actor; Good person=acclaimed actor). Film Twitter seems to love him!
My favorite perfromance by him is in some way a Shakeasperan role: his modern version of Prince Hal in My Own Private Idaho. Also an early role.

Ah, Keanu. I don’t think much of his acting chops, but there are some things he does extremely well. His performance in Parenthood was wonderful! Just spot on as a stupid, madly in love, adolescent doofus. Very winning and real. His worse performance for me was in Dracula. His English accent was terrible, lol, as was his stiff acting. I mean, really REALLY bad. 😂 I don’t go out of my way to watch his movies, but I’ll give them a try once in a while. I’m no critic, which gives me the advantage of not having to trash his skills so I can just enjoy what I want. I think much of the bashing is pure snobbery.
So he has a limited range. 🤷🏻♀️ So do a lot of actors I’ve liked and followed. I admire him for loving storytelling in general and trying to stretch his acting muscles. He’s got a big heart and it shows.
It’s well known he’s a super cool dude who regularly does really great acts of kindness for all kinds of regular folks (most notably the down and out). For that alone I give him props. He doesn’t seem to care much about fame or money, and just wants to live his life as he sees fit. He’s a rarity. He’s an oddball, but I respect him.
That said, yes, the over the top gushing over him right now on social media is a bit, well, over the top, lol, but they’re always looking for the next cutie to lose their minds over. It’s mostly harmless, so why not let them gush?

Wow, some shitty replies for the nicest guy in Hollywood. He might not be the greatest actor but he is an exceptional human being. That's more important than being judged about shallow things like how good you are in a not so important career.
I wish we had more ''shitty'' actors like him who donate a large chunk of their salary to the staff on one of the biggest blockbusters ever (Matrix). Spending a day with a homeless man and all the other nice things. But most importantly, the guy is genuinely amazing, can't take a compliment, goes out of his way to make sure he isn't above anyone else.
Not to mention the suffering he has had. Losing his child and loved one.
Keanu deserves all of the good in this world. I wish he was in every blockbuster film. He is certainly more charismatic than most blockbuster actors these days. And unlike most, an exceptional human being.

He seems a very nice guy indeed. I'm actually worried for a future backlash! The hype is too big and they could take some out of context quote and make it sound like he said something he didn't. In certain quarters an out of context quote is worst than being a serial killer! Also most social media warriors are very involve in fandoms. That's why their activism are mostly about what celebrities say or doesn't say. If they have a new fave the old one become the bad guy!
Another interesting thing about Reeves is how he worked with a very interesting names early in his career: Coppola and Gus Van Sant. Then later he become an action hero in extremely popular films. He somehow become a star without becoming a tabloid celebrity. I just hope he could maintain his low profile now that Internet is obsessed with him!

He’s been around for too long for this recent internet attention to suddenly go to his head.
I don’t know anything about whether or not he’s a great guy, but I just assume that people are kind and good - unless they show me otherwise.

Personally, I don’t think social media carries much weight. All in all, who cares what someone in Podunk, Alabama says about some guy she’s crushing on for 2 months and will never meet or have any effect on? Christ, it’s all so banal, isn’t it? Yes, they scream a lot, but in 10 minutes they’re screaming about something else. Fast moving, shallow stream. Just imo, of course.
