amp.cinemablend.com/news/2476402/7-benedict-cumberbatch-roles-that-show-he-is-more-than-just-sherlock-or-doctor-strange?__twitter_impression=trueThis article is a very complimentary fluffy piece but the productions listed are far from being his best or more representative work! Actually it's a very lousy list! Black Mass? The Fifth Estate! It sounds to me like the author himself hasn't watched too much of BC work! It includes Brexit but not Patrick Melrose!!!!! I personally would recommend to someone new to his work, Patrick Melrose Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy The Hollow Crown: The War of the Roses The Child in Time Atonement (small role but a very different and disturbing performance) Wreckers (another disturbing but this time more ambiguous performance) The Imitation Game (his Oscar nomination so at least for that it's very significant) Twelve Years a Slave (another small role but also another Oscar film) Starter for Ten (he can do comedy, too!) Amazing Grace or Hawking (both breakthrough performances) And if we can include audio then Cabin Pressure (more comedy!) and Copenhagen.

My list of 7 roles to show his range (other than DS and Sherlock) consists of...
1. Patrick Melrose 2. Brexit 3. The Fifth Estate 4. The Child in Time 5. The Hollow Crown 6. Starter for Ten 7. To the Ends of the Earth
Hard to leave out some of the others, like Hawking, Wreckers or The Imitation Game but I was looking for films that were representative of his range as an actor so I went with ones that came from Shakespeare, bio, political issue drama, understated small scale independent drama, comedy, costume drama and film adaptation of a book.

I don’t know how you can narrow down the list! Everything he has done must be watched and heard to get the whole picture of him as an actor.
Also, some of his performances are in so-so movies (e.g. August Osage County, The Other Boleyn Girl), so those movies are never going to make a list, and people would never get see him act in them.

True mllemass. Almost every performance of his is worth watching to some degree, no matter if it was a small supporting role or a starring one. No matter if the movie was a blockbuster or one that garnered a small select audience.
It's really a pity if people ignored the roles he had in movies that didn't get stellar reviews because BC himself has NEVER given a performance that failed from an acting perspective IMO.

That’s an odd list! But those are the rankings for those movies, yes? Not BC’s performances in them.
