Is anyone watching this? I just finished S3 last night and I’m sad it’s over. Olivia did such a fine job, and the whole thing really built in intensity. The 3rd ep, which took place around the Aberfan coal disaster, was heartbreaking and powerful. Olivia had a tough job, b/c by then the Queen had really sunk into her role and persona as pretty icy, which wasn’t easy to portray.
i thought Helena BC, really stole the show as Princess Margaret. She really brought out all of her frustration, malice, privilege, and uselessness, and still managed to make her a tragic figure, even though she brought most of it on herself.
Charles Dance was very good as Mountbatten, and I can’t remember who played Prince Charles, but he was excellent, too.
The whole thing had tons of weight, while telling a story about a family.

I loved the first two seasons, but haven't started the third yet, as I'm hooked on The Sopranos.

Dan and I both have been gobbling up this 3rd season! I think it is by far the best one yet.
Just magnificent storytelling.
I see Benjamin Caron of Sherlock is knee deep in The Crown. And I recognised the actor who played Rosencrantz in BC's Hamlet in the episode about the mining disaster.
We just might get the entire series done today. Tomorrow at the latest. Then it's on to The Irishman. While we were delayed in Toronto before we got on the tour, we took the opportunity to go see Judy and both of us loved it!

Anyone watching this new season? It’s brilliant! It’s very cutting, sharply written, and is the best piece of tv I’ve seen since Patrick Melrose.

Yes I’ve watched the first four episodes. I could have done without all the scenes incorporating the aristos favoutite pass-time - killing various creatures for fun. But otherwise I’m enjoying it. Gillian Anderson is terrific as Margaret Thatcher.

We're watching it. My favourites so far have been Episode 2 "The Balmoral Test" (because of the structure) and Episode 5 "Fagan" (really interesting POV storytelling).
I prefer when the story centres around people other than Diana (not a big "fan" of her, frankly). Gillian Anderson's wonderful as Thatcher (the woman you love to hate) and I think the dramatic tension between her and OC in their scenes is so palpable and yet controlled that it crackles.
Least favourite was "Fairytale" - not really interested in seeing a "Lady Di Pity Party", although the show did seem to try and balance it out with some "victims all" approach throughout.
Interesting note: usually Dan doesn't like to hear the opening credits music after the first episode or so, but not with this show. He insists on seeing the whole intro/title credits role as the music plays because he says the music is so soothing (at first) and then builds so beautifully into an emotional crescendo.

Yet another non-fan of DS. I couldn't abide her. I am a bit confused, are you talking about series 3 roverpup - or series 4?

I didn't watch The Crown but roverpup is talking about series 4.
Edit:
I think those who are watching the show will enjoy this:

Yet another non-fan of DS. I couldn't abide her. I am a bit confused, are you talking about series 3 roverpup - or series 4? My most recent post is about season (series) 4. And I think I should clarify something - it's not that I think Lady Diana was a horrible person (she probably was nice enough and she obviously was a devoted mum), I just don't get all the hero worshipping that has surrounded her (before and after her death). I think there was plenty of manipulation and blame from ALL sides of that "arrangement" (Charles, Diana, the Royal Family, etc.). But it's all been chewed over so much... to see it played out again just seems boring to me. We just watched another episode of the show and it was focused on Margaret and her discovery of the cousins who were "hidden away". Interesting, but I still think the episodes that focus on Thatcher are the strongest ones. Looking forward to more of those.
