I haven't read Rebecca! I'll have to read it and compare. That description reminds me of Crimson Peak, that BC dropped and Tom Hiddleston did, or a little like Jane Eyre.
Maybe it's a new genre: "Western Gothic." There is definitely a sense of foreboding and tension that kept me racing through it.

I haven't read Rebecca neither! But I love Hitchcock! Crimson Creek was certainly inspired in Rebecca and they indeed cast originally BC in the Laurence Oliver role. At the end played by Tom Hiddleston!

My book just arrived! It’s a used - but “like new” - paperback version from Amazon, and only $6.
I’m going to start reading it right away!

I finished it! It contains a lot of explicit animal cruelty but it’s actually a very subtle novel about humans destroying themselves and others. The homosexuality is indeed very discreet. A lot of things are just suggested. I think Peter is also gay but he doesn’t seem ashamed by it. And that’s actually the reason Phil feels attracted to him. Contrary to his father and mother, he seems immune to the humiliation of being called “sissy” by Phil and his men. But Phil justify to himself his desire to be close to the boy to a revenge plot against the mother. Until the end when he admits to himself that he wants to be close to the boy as he used to be close to Bronco Henry. I actually think the end it has to do with Phil being a self-hating gay, tho. In a symbolic way! I don’t want to reveal things but his naked hands were the symbol of his masculinity and the rope the symbol of his link to Peter. He is killed by the poison he himself created (I liked his end, it feels a little like Death in Venice!) The (very) American aspect of the story is the novelty for BC but a lot of his obsessions as actor are there: he is an intellectual (and feel superior to everyone around him) even when he tries to hide it; a lone who really wants to belong but doesn’t know how; a layered character who, of course, hides a lot of secrets about himself; And yes, he is rude like Sherlock and has damaged hands like Dr. Strange! The characters, in general, aren’t very open. A lot of the narration is internal thoughts so surely things have to change on screen. Also IMO the three main characters are the two brothers and Rose. And later Peter. The narration changes from one-character point of view to the other. Campion says Phil is the protagonist so I wonder if she centered everything on him. I mean her last movie was about John Keats but the protagonist was clearly his lover Fanny and we see him from her point of view. Or maybe she was just talking about how larger than life Phil character is and how the main theme lies on him.

I love your insights about it. I think you're right. His revenge plot didn't even make sense, as George is too decent a person to leave Rose over her alcoholism. Ha! This one didn't even occur to me.

Haha, here y’all being all erudite about Themes and Meaning, and I’m just: he’d better start growing out his hair, stat! 😂
Ah, the waters nice at the shallow end. 🐬

Ha! The character sounds very grimy and unattractive, so I hope you're not disappointed!

Oh, I’ve been thinking about his hair, too! It’s described as long and messy, so I can’t wait to see it! Will they keep his natural colour? I don’t think they’ve mentioned the colour so far (I’m half-way through), although his blue eyes have come up about a thousand times!

He reminded me of the closeted military dad next door in 'American Beauty.' I was so afraid that this would have a similar end, with Phil trying to seduce Peter, being rebuffed and killing him from anger and shame.
