I know you just mentioned him and that he isn't the obvious "posh" choice but I think he could be evil, perverted, tormented and charismatic at the same time and he had play "posh" before. He doesn't look anything like BC, tho.
Yes, I corrected it. I wasn't sure I read the Moore comment here or on Twitter and of course it was just OP!

More info: I finished the novels so I'm reading some articles and this 2014 article also mentions the project: www.newyorker.com/magazine/2014/06/02/inheritanceSo the American producer was working in it since the beginning so probably it wasn't initiated by the screenwriter. I'm beginning to think that BC probably mentioned it in that Q&A event because he was offered the role since then. It wouldn't be the first time he would be suggestive about a project he is "secretly" cast. EDITED: Rachel Horovitz was indeed working in the adaptation since 2013: www.dga.org/Events/2013/06-June-2013/EDCFOWTheArtofDevelopment.aspxDavid Nicholls also said the project was originally for Channel 4.

I found the "interview" with Edward St. Aubyn in which BC's name was mentioned for first time in 2014. It's not exactly an interview but a report of his participation at Cheltenham Literature Festival. www.thetimes.co.uk/article/booker-prize-is-an-instrument-of-torture-slv92s9cmj3Both BC and Sam Mendes were attached since then. Of course the question is if Mendes is still attached or not. Maybe he is not exactly an auteur director but he has a good visual sense and it's familiar with literary adaptations. I think he would be a good choice.

Sam Mendes would be great! I loved American Beauty.

EDITED: Rachel Horovitz was indeed working in the adaptation since 2013: I'd never seen that Rachael Horovitz quote before, I don't think, and that's very interesting re the direction that they were then, at least, looking to go in. The early episodes (depending on when BC takes over as the adult Patrick), which could frighten off the audience, do need to be tied in to the later ones. And the obvious way to do that is with a BC voice over, emphasising the language at the same time. And this comparison with "Brideshead" does kind of confirm that. So that's all to the good i my opinion. Well found old quote there! But I'm not sure BC was necessarily officially attached so early, although it is absolutely like him to have hinted at potential roles. Being talked to, certainly, but I seem to recall seeing Tom Hiddleston similarly quoting Patrick Melrose as a role he particularly wanted too (which would seem to indicate that he was being talked to as well at some stage), although I don't know how that related in time. I don't dislike TH, and he also has a very nice voice for a voice over, but I can see why BC would have been preferred in this case even apart from his involvement in the production side.

Sam Mendes would be great! I loved American Beauty. I don't think Sam Mendes' "attachment" was ever with the actual prospect that he would direct the Melrose books adaptation himself. If was just originally going to be produced by his company (Neal Street Productions), as per "The Hollow Crown" etc. And I'm not sure there's any connection at all now. And thanks, Magda, re explaining the BBCode thing, which was what I didn't know. I'd been struggling with the quote facility otherwise, when it wasn't that it didn't work at all, it just malfunctioned. And the preview facility never worked without it either.

I don't know if he was attached in 2013 but apparently he was since 2014. That's why I suspected it. He tend to name books, actors or directors he will work next as favorites when asked. Hiddleston could play his best friend, Johnny! 😉 The novels aren't in first person so I doubt he will be a narrator. It would be strange to do that big change when the narrator is much more a literary tool than something cinematic. Actually I personally think it rarely works in movies. Scorsese is a big exemption! I think she mentions Brideshead because it's also about British high class. It seems there are a few comparisons out there between Evelyn Waugh and Edward St Aubyn. I think we discussed at the time that maybe Sam Mendes was the producer and probably he was but clearly the main instigator always was Rachel Horovitz. EDITED: Seriously, Hiddleston is so youthful that I can't imagine him playing an alcoholic middle aged father! He is a good actor so maybe he can! I can't imagine him like a hopeless junkie neither! (He is so clean, too!) Has he ever played a junkie? EDITED 2: I found a comment by Hiddleston and he specifically is answering a question about reading the books for pleasure and not for work:
Although at remember he said he wanted to play the role or something AFTER BC said so. Someone posted the comment on IMDB and was a silly fuss about it!

Loved the New Worker article, sgev!
I know this is going to be an unpopular opinion in some quarters, but I hope they don't cast Tom Hiddleston as Patrick's best friend. I haven't seen him in many things, but have been extremely unimpressed with what I have seen. It's not a big role. I would prefer someone like Patrick Kennedy, who played McKechnie in Parade's End and Kiera Knightley's brother in Atonement.

Of course he won't be cast as Johnny! He is much bigger star for the role! Patrick Kennedy, who also played the third man to Cumberbatch and Hiddleston in War Horse, should be good.
What about Sarah Paulson for Eleanor? She played an older version of one of her characters in American Horror Story and she, and the make-up, was very credible so I think she could play old Eleanor, too. I just love Sarah Paulson. She is great!
I can't wait for the actual to happen! And the director, of course!

I like Sarah Paulson, too.
I think Benedict has known Patrick Kennedy for along time - maybe as far back as University. He was one of the people, including Kiera, with whom he shared a house while filming Atonement.
It will be fun when we hear about actual casting!
