I actually bought the new Empire magazine which includes a preview of 2021 movies hoping there would be something about Louis Wain or The Power of the Dog! Nothing!!! Lol But at least there was a nice 4 stars out of 5 review about The Courier! Attachment DeletedAttachment Deleted

This isn’t the first review to mention that Penkovsky’s absence during the last part of the movie seems to be a flaw in the movie. Did they not understand that it was a true story? We know what happened to Greville Wynne and the other characters because they lived to talk about it, and there were witnesses. Unless Penkovsky’s captors kept journals about torturing him, we can’t know what he went through during that time. However, we can guess that it was probably similar to what they did to Greville.
I remember going to see The Perfect Storm years ago. They told us at the beginning that it was a true story. It was ok, I suppose, until the end when we find out that everyone on the boat died. While we watched the end credits, I remember I turned to my sister and asked her “If everyone died, how do they know what happened?” There wouldn’t have been any survivors to tell the story. It bothered me a lot. If there was nobody around to tell us what happened to Penkovsky, then it was absolutely right that they didn’t show it. Otherwise, I would have complained about it!

I think the clue is the “based” in the “based on a true story”. It’s never the true story per se but a fictional one based on something that really happened.
They could invented something for Penkovsky as they surely did for Greville (his books were apparently full of exaggeration anyway and I think Cooke admitted they didn’t took them 100% seriously) but the last scenes without him weren’t even too many! And I agreed with you that maybe they wanted to respect the mystery of what happened to him. There are a few versions: there is even one of he killing himself.
Although, they fabricated one scene for him after being trapped: the meeting of both characters in jail. It was a corny scene but clearly designed as a homage to Penkovsky from the West for his sacrifice.

Someone know if they really will release this movie early next week in the UK? Because if that’s the case I would hope for a few new interviews this weekend! Hopefully!

This isn’t a review, per se, but I bought it last night and have now watched it twice! Many more viewings on the horizon, I imagine. I usually have to watch things at least 10 times to wring all the subtleties out of it. There’s also a 1/2 hour extra thing on the purchase that is quite detailed going into all the aspects of shooting, from casting and locations to the music and costuming. Very nice.
My gosh, it was excellent. Snappy enough to keep everything moving (actually I thought the end/last third felt rushed), lovely detail, sincere performances, GREAT music. BC was perfection, again.
One part that killed me was the lingering insanity/overwhelm in GW’s eyes in that tiny clip at the end, and how BC perfectly presaged/captured that standing in the entryway to his home after he got back. That poor man!
Anyway, I loved it. Powerful stuff, well made.
