Well, if you believe all the gossip (IF) there isn't likely to be a 5th series.

Well, if you believe all the gossip (IF) there isn't likely to be a 5th series. Why would I believe gossip? Until I hear from everyone involved with the show - or even just one person - that there will be no S5, I will believe that there will be.

Hear, hear! Thing is, if Ben and Martin don't like each other, it isn't likely is it.🤨

I don’t know how that rumor got started, about Ben & Martin not getting along. It surfaced sometime right after S4 when the JLers were having a meltdown b/c their grand love scene never manifested. I think it got started b/c someone transferred their feelings about them into reality. I never saw a single interview of either of them complaining about the other one. Martin takes the piss sometimes, but that’s just him messing around being funny.
They are wildly different people irl, but they’re just co-workers. They have terrific chemistry together and I doubt any difference between them in their personalities would affect their work together b/c they’re both professionals. If someone has hard evidence to the contrary, I’d like to see it. Otherwise, to me, it’s just made up bs.

TBF I think it was the press, not the crazies, who originally fabricanted that rumor. Freeman did an interview in which he kind of criticized some fans (and with fans I mean the ones who REALLY believed the show would end with both characters having sex!). Then one out of context quote was shown, by the same "journalist", to BC in another interview and he didn't agree with it and used the word "pathetic" to describes the situation. Then media used the adjective without context and suddenly BC was defending fans against "pathetic" Freeman! The Sun even wrote a long "article" about how they both despised each other and the not very social Freeman being envious of BC's popularity.
But yes, they are very different individuals and I don't think they ever were the closest friends or even move in the same circles but they clearly had a good working relationship. In general, Freeman is not someone who has a big number of friends in the business. He has mentioned it before. BC is the opposite! I remember how the press was sure that Freeman would be BC's Best Man just because they played best friends on TV! That was silly but they were responding to what people wanted to hear: those two are the biggest friends ever! Then they were surprised when Freeman didn't even show up AND the evil Moriarty/Andrew Scott did! But... they are enemies!!! Lol. There were articles about it!

They have very different ways of dealing with the public. Benedict doesn’t seem to care about what they say about him, as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone. So if people assumed he and Martin were great pals, he didn’t do much to correct them. According to his interviews, he apparently has dozens of best friends!
I don’t think Martin cares much about what is said about him, either, but he seems to have a problem with lying when answering questions. You can tell when he’s going to great lengths to say something in as nice a way as possible, while also still being honest. That was the reason some fans accused him of being unhappy with Sherlock. He had been avoiding interacting with fans because they kept wanting him to talk about his friendship with Benedict, which they had imagined, and he couldn’t do it.

Thanks, sgev! Obviously my trivia knowledge regarding everything Ben & Martin is slipping. I had forgotten that the press started it & the fans picked up on it. 😱

Oh that's right! It's all coming back now
There is a certain kind of person/fan who, immaturely to my mind, wants every actor ever to have the exact same relationship with castmates that their characters have. So there we some in the Sherlock fandom that took it almost personally that BC and MF weren't as close as Sherlock and John, and took any indication that they weren't BFF's as evidence of a feud or dislike. They didn't seem to understand that a) actors aren't the the characters they play b) that plenty of people get along just fine with co-workers but don't need or want to be thick as thieves with them and c) people not being joined at the hip or not being BFF's does NOT = people hating each other's guts. It's all very strange to me.
