Yes, I’m sure that’s accurate. But I still think those early positive reviews were written later, after the reviewers looked back on all the episodes. Also, don’t forget that the longer the show was on, they more it was talked about on social media. I remember reading tweets by people watching it in the UK (before it aired here) who said the episode was awful and they had to turn it off and go online to give it a bad review - they reviewed an episode they hadn’t watched. There was a race for who would be first to write how bad the show was - I think that still happens today. After seeing TPOTD at TIFF, I saw that there were more than 7000 mostly bad reviews for it on IMDB. That was impossible, of course, because 7000 people couldn’t have seen it yet. It had only shown at a couple of film festivals at that point, so maybe 700 at most had seen it, and I doubt that they were rushing back to post their negative reviews on IMDB. You’d have to check the dates that the Sherlock reviews were first published, because you’ll see that the early positive reviews are from later, after the show was really popular, looking back at it. That article left out the biggest reason for the show’s negative reviews - insane fans. I remember that the contemporary reviews were very positive. I remember that the backlash came later after it become massive although in a culterish way outside the UK, BC and Freeman were hyper popular on Twitter but when they went to the Emmy for the first time as nominees it was VERY clear that American entertainment press barely had idea who those two were! That’s why haters who talk of BC as some kind of has been are silly and it’s very telling who they are: Tumblrinas! They are “has been” Tumblr idols but thanks god, Tumblr doesn’t exist anymore! On the other hand, BC is more popular than ever in the real world thanks to Marvel! I agreed with that the show was always “eccentric” in his plotting but I also agreed with the author that it become much more convoluted after Sherlock’s “death”. I also agreed with you about some kind of backlash but I think it wasn’t since the beginning but after it became a major hit. I would say that the wedding episode was actually good even when it was hated by critics and fans. The episode with Toby Jones was brilliant but yeah, the sister and the assassin girlfriend storylines were kind of ridiculous IMHO! You are right about fans and that’s the awful thing produced by UK press, BC is so massive and, by a lot, the biggest thing that came from the show so if Sherlock fans behave like crazy they aren’t Sherlock fans but the feared Cumberbitches! That’s why he mentions them but not the deluded culture behind the serie. They don’t know about it and they don’t care about it. They care about a popular male actor having monstrous female bases so all bizarre fan behavior by Sherlock fanatics was always blame of the so called Cumberbitches!

I really like what he said in that Telluride podcast interview about all sorts of fans being excited to see him there, whether they were fans of Sherlock or Marvel or whatever. It’s so nice that he hasn’t put Sherlock or any past performances behind him and moved on. I now feel reassured that one day, when we meet again and I find my voice to actually speak, I can tell him how much I love him in Sherlock, and he’ll appreciate it and won’t look at me like I’m some kind of nut!

I just found this excellent review of The Lying Detective on YouTube. Cartoon format, great insight into themes. Warning: liberal use of the F word. m.youtube.com/watch?v=jXVkExnSY1A

Good FIND QZ! He indeed did REALLY, REALLY like it! I watched his review of The Final Problem as well, and while I don't agree with his assessment, I really appreciate his sense of humour and believe he is genuine in his feelings about the show.

Great video! I’ll have to check out some of that guy’s other reviews.
What I like about the video is that he’s clearly a fan, so I suppose that makes him entitled to find fault with the show. If that makes any sense!

I could only find 4 episodes that he reviewed. The rest of his stuff is Doc Who and shows I’ve never heard of. He didn’t like the other parts of S.4, so much, and went Wiggins over TFP, lol. But he’s a good reviewer and seems to know what he’s talking about.
I love how he praised BC through the roof. ☺️
