This brutal movie won an award in Venice and I read a few comments yesterday by people attacking the director because he apparently said the term "white Mexicans" was racist. I was confused because I imagined the movie mostly criticized "white" elites but I haven't watched the film so I don't know. This The Guardian article try to explain the polemic but this quote made me laugh,

I don't doubt some of the criticism against the president is by malicious actors but the guy "put the poor fist" program mostly consists in giving money to old people, poor old people but also rich ones. Everyone. Nothing against that but to achieve this, he disappeared universally health programs in favor of cancer patients. In particular, programs that helped kids and women with cancer. Kids are literally dying because they are no longer freely receiving their expensive medication! Seriously, some of the strongest critics against him are the parents of these kids! Last week, he disappeared other social funds including one that helped to the country's film industry (I guess that's a rich people thing!) but also the emergency one that it's implemented in case of a major tragedy.
One of the first famous victims of the Covid-19 here in Mexico was this great left-wing protest song-writer called Oscar Chavez. When he died, the president and his fans rightly honoured him but also used him to promote themselves. Some angrily attacked right-wing people including ex President Felipe Calderon for also mourned him. They apparently didn't have right to say nice things about him because Chavez was one of them and wrote song criticizing Conservative ex-Presidents. Then one of his last interviews was circulated and Chavez revealed in it that he was writing a new song in which he planned to criticize the new pseudo- left wing president. Why? Because his project of building a major railway that not only is destroying protected areas but also stealing lands that belongs to indigenous people. Chavez wasn't a fanatical but a sincere leftist, a Zapatista (by the way, Zapatistas are now considered Conservatives because they are also critical of the actual government) and, in retrospective, he was one of the early victims of the terrible way the government is managing the pandemic.
Anyway, it would be interesting to see what happens with this movie now that woke Twitter types and the president fanatics discovered it!
The country’s populist president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, came to power on a pledge to “put the poor first”, and some critics argue that New Order reflects the insecurities of Mexico’s elite.
“In the mentality of people who are anti-López Obrador, [the trailer] makes them think that a social revolution is happening, in spite of the fact that no social revolution is occurring,” Lanzagorta said.
