Dan and I have been watching on YouTube over the last few weeks a fascinating series of Yale University lectures by Sterling Professor David Blight. He's a brilliant lecturer! He specializes in Civil War History and is considered to be an expert on the life of Frederick Douglass (among his many books is the 2018 Pulitzer Prize winning Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom).
These are a full video series of a course from Yale. The only frustrating thing is that wer aren't allowed to see the overhead projections of maps, photos, etc. because of copyright restrictions.
But Professor Blight is just amazing to listen to! His wry sense of humour peeks through every once in a while, his incredible knowledge and knack for tying the a wide variety of aspects of society together to give a rich tapestry of life in the era as well as giving gifted insights into the topics.
Can't recommend this series enough!

I've become a huge fan of this guy! He seems to have read every book every written and when he lectures he references so many archival letters, journals and documents that add such a richness of detail to his lessons!
This afternoon we took a break from his course lectures and listened to a presentation he gave to the Organization of American Historians about The Civil War in American Memory in 2013. Brilliant! He wove all sorts of stories together about the remembrances of many wars - including the Second World War, Korean War and the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. If you are at all interested in the sweeping scope of history and how it affects every aspect of society.
Just as a side note, I also looked up a number of Blight's essays he has written for The Atlantic and other sites. He excoriates Trump and his assault on democracy with a firm footing in historical perspective. Excellent reading.
