Anybody watched this yet? I saw it last night. Hoo boy! It was kind of a mess. I’m not going to put anything in a spoiler b/c we all know what happens, right?
It was impossible not to compare it to the Fontaine/Olivier version, but after 20 minutes or so that comparison faded, and not for good reasons.
First of all, Lily James was far too pretty to be the wife, although she tried really hard to be waifish and subordinate. I have renewed appreciation now for Joan Fontaine, lol. Armie tried, but he didn’t have much to work with or perhaps he couldn’t find the inner life of the character. He couldn’t brood or be repressed properly and there was no tension or even much of any emotion from either of them. Thank god there wasn’t Deep Staring as the camera moves in with ba ba ba bummmm music.
KST kinda had a Frau Blucher thing going on, which was *hilarious* although I don’t think it was supposed to be. I had high hopes for her b/c I love KST, but yikes.
I couldn’t decide if we were in a Hallmark romance or a ghost story or some kind of boring English mystery novel. At two points during transitions some unknown person on the soundtrack burst into song so then we were in some cheesy music video!
The sets, costumes, & cars were *gorgeous* but because everything was so over the top it didn’t feel real. In general, there was no tension, no snap, no mystery, and not much caring on my part.
Those are just my first impressions. Quality production, but wildly missed the mark! I may have to watch it again. 😉
