Anyone watching this series?
Stars Dakota Fanning, Daniel Brühl and Luke Evans.
It is strange little show - kind of a detective horror story, especially this season. A period costume drama and very dark.
And as an addled bonus this year Lara Pulver as a new alienist on the scene who intrigues the Daniel Brühl character both professionally and personally.
Now horror isn't really my cuppa, but we've stuck with this show and in the latter half of the season it is beginning to pay off. I'm actually anxious to see what happens!
So the Cumberbatch connection is thrice gold! Brühl, Pulver and I guess Evan's because he was in the Hobbit movies that BC was Smaug in.
Anyway, this series is an acquired taste if you're into the early days of criminal psychology, seeing metropolitan New York in its infancy and a doggedly determined female detective make her mark on the scene. In many ways Brühl's character reminds me of Sherlock and it just occurred to me he has a fascination with the character played by Lara Pulver!

I’ve had it on my watchlist for a while, so it must have sounded interesting to me!

I finally got around to watching this series in the last few days. I found S1 unsatisfying when they (and we) never found out why the serial killer was killing! That was the whole point of having a psychiatrist involved in the case. And they didn’t return to that story in S2, so that’s it for that!
In S2, the characters suddenly went out of character and behaved in ways that made little sense. A strong, intelligent, modern-thinking young woman who doesn’t need a man decides that she wants him after all once he’s engaged to someone else. Huh? The good guys drop like flies while the bad guys get away with all sorts of gruesome crimes. If I saw one more corrupt politician, policeman or Doctor, I would have thrown something at my tv!
That said, it was still an interesting series! I didn’t realize that the police commissioner Roosevelt from S1, was based on a real person - the man who went on to become US president a few years later. The actor who played him went from being a good guy in this series to being a weirdo perverted serial killer in the new tv series Big Sky - and he’s totally believable in both roles!
