Anyone catch this yet? It’s on Netflix. Wow what a kind of mess, lol. Totally bingeable.
It’s a torrid mixture of fake dating, false Regency period, lust, anachronisms, too many characters, raised eyebrows & scandal sheets. I finished it last night. Eight 1 hour episodes so very watchable. The costumes & sets are fabulous, but it suffered from a number of issues.
It often strays from accepted structures/rules of the Regency period, uses the words “the ton” waaay too much, but it’s a fantasy. People are losing their minds over the mixed race cast, which isn’t really a problem at all. The lead man is *gorgeous.*
interested to hear what y’all think. 😃

Wonder why the BBC didn't pick this up?

This really isn’t BBC material. It’s elevated trash. 😉

I could only watch the first episodes. Couldn't stand it any longer. Mediocre, predictable, repetitive, shallow and boring.
Also, i have a petty problem with the actresses playing sisters Daphne and Eloise: their ages. The latter is obviosly much older.

Dan and I started watching this a couple of days ago and... well, it's just ridiculous.
The history buff in me is just silently screaming during EVERY episode! It's a complete mess with anachronisms.
It is gorgeous to look at - the sets, the costumes, the locations! But the writing! Just horrible!
And I don't think the creators/writers can make up their mind about the "colorblind" aspect, frankly. I'm all for a colorblind cast (like was done in The Hollow Crown") but you shouldn't then turn around and make "race" an issue in the story, should you? That kind of breaks the "rules" of being colorblind, doesn't it? I found it jarring.
My other HUGE personal bugaboo is all the SMOKING of cigarettes! I know it's very hard to pin this series down to an exact time period but honestly did they get sponsored by the tobacco lobby?? Premade cigarettes didn't come along until at least 1880 (and this series HAS to be earlier than that) and yet we have the one sister smoking cigarettes like a chimney and never once hand rolling the filthy things! And anyone would have easily known she was a smoker because she would STINK to high heaven the way she puffs away! So what is she hiding exactly?!?😡
We'll probably finish it off because it's kind of fun now just seeing how ridiculous it can get, but I often feel like I need a bath after viewing!
I knew we weren't in for anything remotely resembling Jane Austen when I saw it was produced by "Shondaland"! Dan and I have given up on more series that we started only to find out later Shonda Rhimes was behind them! I really don't like her style. She seems to have a knack for taking interesting ideas and grinding them into tacky, mediocre mush!
