Well, if I was looking for an antidote to watching dramas about rich elites and their troublesome lives this is the one that does the trick!
Just watched the first two episodes of this miniseries starring Mark Ruffalo and boy oh boy is it relentlessly grim and forthright in presenting the pain in a mundane life!
It's not pretty in the least but it is fascinating! MR is utterly mesmerizing as the more stable twin brother (and almost completely unrecognizable as the lesser stable of the two as well). His life is complete shit and he knows it.
This show doesn't truck in any way in sentimentality. It is absolutely brutal to watch Ruffalo's performance. But it's also what keeps you coming back for more.
It's so realistic in presenting unvarnished life, sometimes I feel like I am a voyeur intruding into someone's personal trauma.
WARNING : This is "ultra" realism in filming so if a man hacking off his own hand with a machete or an up close look at a man's bruised hairy balls makes you squeamish, then this might not be your cup of tea. But if you can view all these small details in the overall dramatic thrust of this production then it can take you into a deeply personal hell of one man - no, make that TWO men!
I already see why Mark Ruffalo got a statue for this performance! I haven't seen any superhero movies of Ruffalo's but I have seen him in 2 other fine performances - Spotlight and Foxcatcher. Both were excellent dramas.
