It seems what's going on with those proclaiming they know what kinds of roles Benedict "always" plays is that they are equating "all the roles I've noticed he's done" with "all the roles he's ever played" They are using their ignorance (willful or otherwise) to justify whatever position they are arguing.
Unfortunately, that kind of faulty thinking shows up a lot on social media, everything from "well I've never noticed/experienced racism, so it doesn't exist" to "He never sexually assaulted me, so I don't believe he sexually assaulted anyone else, ever. Anyone who says he did is a liar".
And as far as the range of characters he's played -
Sure, Benedict's best known roles are often very intelligent characters, where their intellect is a big feature of the character: Khan, Sherlock, Doctor Strange, Turing. Not only brilliant, but confident in their brilliance. But as you all have said, those characters are also very very different in other ways.
But Martin, Little Charles* and, I'd add, Bernard from Small Island, his character in Four Lions, and even The Creature from Frankenstein, have shown he has range to play less sharp, or more naive, or less intellectual characters who are well fleshed out and believable.
*Little Charles ... I wonder what his intellect is really like? It seems much the time (and probably his whole life) he is so belittled and put down by other louder, ruder people around him, and has had so much withheld from him, that he could actually be bright in some ways but doesn't express it much or even realize it himself because the most vocal people around him only tell him how worthless, weak and clueless he is. He may not be a super genius like Sherlock or Khan or Hawking etc, but I think he'd do alright in a more normal, supportive environment.

I was thinking more in relation to the plot. Yes, the plot is very similar with Rogue Male.

Hannah, now you got me full of feels for Little Charles. Poor baby, carrying the burden of his mother’s guilt and hateful attitude all those years and he didn’t have a clue why! 😭

I’d like to think that Little Charles and his sister/cousin went off to NY, where no one knew them, as they had planned. I doubt that she would ever want to see her horrible family again, and she could convince sweet Little Charles to leave his family. It’s not like they had ever had a “normal” family life anyway. It’s better to just cut those people out of their lives and do what makes them happy!

My thoughts exactly, Mllemass! I so want them to be happy. Plus, there’s not any chance at kids, so it doesn’t matter that they were bro & sis/cousins, does it? 😬

I would think the creature in Frankenstein is quite a departure from what most people think of as a stereotypical Benedict role.

He is kind of an intellectual, tho.! He quickly understand Milton's Paardise Lost. He is innocent but also very intelligent and finally corrupted by the maliciousness of the world.
Apart of his silly Martin from Cabin Pressure, his other dumb character is Patrick in Starred for Ten. He is a nerd but also very stupid!

Creature is definitely smart, but certainly not posh and aristocratic.

Actually, one of his very early roles was a working class boy, a fisherman, who is the boyfriend of the lesbian heroine in Tipping the Velvet! She left him for the girls! Casting directors weren't very prejudiced then!
Another working class role is the village teacher returning to his natal town in Wreckers. He is very complex, layered and creepy character, tho.

I will hear no words spoken against Patrick Watts, lol. He’s just uptight and socially inept, not stupid. Okay, he’s also terrible at trivia, but I love him anyway. 😂😂😂
