I was so sad to read about the death of Les McKeown, lead singer of the Bay City Rollers. My friends and I were nuts about them when we were 12-13. My favourite was Eric.
I’m sure I’ve told this before . . . My best friend Brenda’s parents drove us to the airport in Toronto on the day the BCR were arriving here for a concert. I forged a note from my mother to be off school for the afternoon (Brenda’s parents were fine with her missing school!) We wore the plaid outfits, of course, for our little adventure. When we got there, Brenda’s parents let us run around on our own while they went to the bar. But we weren’t really alone, because there were hundreds of other girls dressed in plaid also running around the airport. Of course, we never did see the BCR that day, but it was so much fun! I brought my camera with me, so I have pictures!
I never got to see them in concert. They only performed in Toronto and not in my city, so my parents were never going to take me there. I did a project on the music of Scotland for school one year, just so I could play their songs for the class. Ha! In 2002, when I bought a vehicle with my very first CD player, the first CD I bought was The Bay City Rollers Greatest Hits.
By the way, this is the chant we screamed throughout the airport that day, along with all other other girls there.

When they played this in Love Actually, I knew that they made the movie just for me!
