people.com/movies/benedict-cumberbatch-reflects-on-playing-repressed-gay-character-the-power-of-the-dog/I don’t know the story of the word “queer” but I doubt it was used in the 1920s (the article says 1960s but they are obviously thinking on when the book was written), at least it wasn’t used as something positive. Interesting enough, the word “gay” was already used to describe gay man in a positive way but only in Broadway and between gay men. Not in Montana ranches. I imagine there gay only meant a very happy person.

This is People’s summary of the movie!
Where did they get that? He doesn’t “grapple” with anything, and that is not what the movie is about! Even if you, the viewer, think that that’s what’s happening, it doesn’t happen until almost the end. Why do they insist on giving away the endings of movies?

Because that’s the “scandalous” part, according to them! And yeah, it’s something that should had been slowly revealed while watching the film.
It’s indeed a ver lazy article (like the Variety one) but BC’s quotes are nice.

What the Sam Hill is this? 🤨 (from the People article)
“Cumberbatch, who is straight and has previously played a gay character, has faced increased scrutiny in this role.”

I recognize Campion, Ari Wegner, Tanya Seghatchian and, of course, Sophie in that group.
