Haha! I listened to the IndieWire podcast that the person quoted, by the way. When they touch on TPOTD, they talk about how BC is the "trojan horse" that will draw in non-cinephiles (meaning those who don't know who Jane Campion is) to watch it because they want to see the "Benedict Cumberbatch cowboy" movie. It's not a traditional crowdpleaser like Belfast or King Richard, but they both like it so much they think it's actually destined to become a classic, and Phil is such an interesting, "memorable" character (and performance) that it could help it quietly get to Best Picture while Belfast and Richard "battle it out". They think Jane's the one to beat for Best Director.
Interestingly they touched on how Kenneth Brannagh admitted he hasn't watched Roma. I poke fun at Belfast a lot here, but the question's quite a lose-lose situation for him don't you think? If he'd said he had watched it, it would've confirmed people's suspicions that he'd based Belfast on that. But since he hasn't, people jumped to point out he's an Academy member and should've watched it since it was a BP nominee.

RT-approved critic, and also I noticed his original tweet has another poster we haven't seen yet, though it's low-res:
