Re: Brokeback Mtn. My dad wanted to go see that movie b/c he thought it was about cowboys. When I told him it was about gay cowboys, he shrieked. He was an unrepentant homophobe and I can’t imagine having to sit next to him in that movie listening to him rant about that in public, so I’m glad there were spoilers.
I think the whole “discourse” about only gay actors playing gay roles is ridiculous. They’re actors. They should be able to play anything. It’s not like being gay is visible, like skin color. The inclusivity needs to come, yes, but that’s a silly, limiting line to draw it at.

That Quilloughby Stan person is very clever and produces great tweets. I recommend a follow if you’re on Twitter. They’re very active.

There is a podcast! But why he has to ask about Marvel! This bothers me more than it should. I just find it disrespectful that you only mention Dunst' performance and don't make silly irrelevant CBM references but with Benedict you don't mention anything about his performance in that tweet but make a stupid, irrelevant Dr Strange reference and bring up Tom Holland and Spiderman? Like what?! Ugh. Anyone know who he has for Best Actor as nr 1? Seeing as he has Benedict as nr 2. Is it Dinklage? I haven’t he led his new predictions. I really don’t want to go there this early in the game and when it’s a lot of much more exciting stuff right now! But the last I checked he was championing Will Smith, who has a more conventional film and is a huge star! I also think he is a Dunst fan. He is predicting her as the winner since day one and TBH a supporting category is indeed less competitive than a lead one but we will see. Some critics named her as prominent but others believe her character is not too big. In the book, I think she is just too passive. She could win some critics awards, tho. Especially, if they really want yo awarded her. I don’t think that’s the case in the Academy but we will see. I don’t even judge him too hard for mentioning Spider-Man. That’s the popular movie and BC is the popular guy (I saw the red carpet video from Venice and it was kind of uncomfortable how photographers were screaming “Benedict” and ignoring Campion and Dunst) but yeah it bothers me too, especially because I watched a lot of interviews for other stuff hoping he was asked about this movie and the questions were always about Marvel and now, that it’s the time for him to talk about TPOT, they ask about Marvel or about straigh actors playing gays!

Ah thanks a lot for your insight sgev that explains a lot. It's just frustrating when people misspell his name a decade later thinking they're being funny (when it screams "hey i'm an immature 12 year old" ) or in this case mentioning his other more prominent roles or movies even if they have nothing to do with his current role. No wonder certain directors, actors hate a certain genre. It's become even worse in the last decade.
Usually I wouldn't be too worried with Smith but with them snubbing Chadwick last time and the reactions from that might work in Smiths favor here, though I hope they reward purely for the performance and nothing else. We'll see. Fingers crossed.

I’m certain I’ve told this before . . , One of the times I saw Brokeback Mountain was with a friend from work. While there, we ran into another group of women that we knew from work. We said hello to them but sat apart. After the movie, my friend and I went to one of the nearby restaurants for dinner, and the other women were there, too, so we all sat together to discuss the movie.
I was curious about what they had thought of it. One of the other women, an older lady, said she was glad she hadn’t come with her husband because he would have hated it and ruined it for her. Another older lady said that she had been wanting to see it but her husband refused to go with her. (The movie never did get a wide release, so they had all travelled from out of town to see it). The one woman in that group, who I was sort of friends with, was quiet during the discussion. Finally, she gave us her thoughts. She said “When I knew we were coming to see this, I thought to myself ‘Oh no!’ because I had a bad feeling of what to expect.” She paused, and I became very worried about what she would say next. She continued “So even though I prepared myself mentally, I just can’t ever get used to . . . country music.” Ha! We we howling with laughter!
But that also brings up another point. I learned years ago that women are willing to accompany their husbands to any sort of movie, just so they can go out and have a date night. But when these wives want to see something without loud, violent chase scenes, their husbands won’t go with them. My married women friends tell me that all the time. The only time they get to see a decent movie is when they go with me. Even some of the younger married women at work would complain about some awful blockbuster movie they had to sit through, just to be out with their husbands.
So if anyone wonders how the Fast and Furious movies make so much money, it’s because half the audience is sitting there beside their husbands, hating every minute it.

We'll see. Fingers crossed. The movie King Richard is getting good/average reviews, not raves but also not bad ones. It is at 73 on MC. I think that Will Smith has real chances to be nominated and perhaps win.
I think that what happened last year goes against WS not in favour. People voted for what they thought it was the best performance. That is, if other actor has a better performance than his.

Re: mllemass' movies story...
My personal experience is very different. Dan loves slow, character driven movies (what a lot of people would call "chick flicks") as much as he loves historical dramas. He wouldn't be caught dead at a Fast and Furious type film.
And he has gone to ALL sorts of movies that I specifically wanted to go to, while I have only rarely gone to shows he only wanted to see (maybe two).
He absolutely loathes comic book films and yet he went to see Dr. Strange with me (and I only wanted to see it because of BC).
But I really don't think he is all that unique.
I think plenty of husbands who do things that they aren't particularly interested in to please their partners. At least in my group of friends.
Dan's not enthralled with ballet or opera (which I am) and we have to go to great expense to see such things from our little city in the "ass end" of Ontario (train fare, hotels, etc) but he's spent the money gladly to take us both to Toronto to see things like this.
Hell, he even flew us to LA so I could see an actor I liked in a play (and built the whole week we spent there around seeing the play this actor was in twice!). Then, when the same actor was in another play in New York later we went there just because I wanted to see him again. Ok, those last two examples may be a bit unusual...lol!
