Given the reception of the 4th season by many fans (but critics as well: some of them really soundend more like angry johnlockers than journalists, lol) I doube they are very inspired to do another season or even special just now. What for? They used to do it because they loved it and the viewers loved it. But after the wave of hatred and slender? Cannot really imagine anyone of them to be eager to continue.

I agree with those of you who think the team would be less than motivated to do another special or season of Sherlock after all the crap that has come down the tube on Season 4. I know I would just say "Screw it!" if I were them after the online harassment of cast and crew, the attempts at trying to get MG off a charity, the constant "campaigns" to have the BBC answer for their "crimes against humanity", the threats, the insults and the pompous "metas" about how it could have been done much, much better by the "fans".
I know not all the fans have reacted that way but unfortunately the empty cans are the ones who have rattled the loudest in this regard and are the ones who will leave the most lasting impression.
I know I wouldn't give them the satisfaction of providing any more fodder for them to grumble over.
And I'm fine with that actually. I personally loved the 4th season so for me it was a great ending for the show.
:-))

The programmes did really well in terms of viewing figures despite the ranting of the JLers. So there is definitely the audience for a fifth series.
Personally though I think it's best to leave it where it is. It was a truly wonderful piece of Television and I'd hate to see it become a lesser version of itself as all long running series tend to do.
Maybe sometime in the future they might do a one off special but I think there won't another series.

I was thinking the same thing. I can't imagine that broadcasters would ever base their decisions on social media. Way back before the Internet, they used ratings and awards to determine the success of a show, so I'm sure they are still important. Social media really just shows the strong reactions (good or bad) to what viewers watched.
I agree that I wouldn't want Sherlock to become a lesser version of itself, but it's nowhere near doing that. And 4 seasons - 13 episodes - certainly don't make it long-running yet.

I wish the slighted fans would just stop whining. I don't really want there to be a 5th series cause I thought the ending of TFP was perfect, but if the fans of the show keep going like this there certainly won't be. Besides, I don't know what the heck Brealey did to say she's queerbashing (seriously, what was it? I even checked her Twitter but saw nothing.) However, they missed a perfectly valid reason to rake her over the coals.
How could she miss baked potato!? Martin's meager joy in life...

I really regret it should have ended in such a way, with all the controversy and - johnlockers aside - quite a number of snarky reviews.

I think in years ahead the Sherlock series will be remembered as the special event/classic it was and all the JL silliness will be forgotten.

I mis-remembered what was said so I want to clarify. Loo wasn't accused of gay bashing, she was accused of "attacking gay people." Just wanted to clear that up. 😬
