Wes Anderson:

It’s a nice interview. Here is what he says about Spike Lee,
He was recently “attacked” by Film Twitter because he dared to say that Lee was one of his main influences. Film Twitter is convinced he never cast black people (something completely false since the beginning of his career!) and that means in their little brains that he doesn’t care for black people so how it’s possible he cited the major Black American filmmaker as one of his biggest influences.
Also I have seen people saying he is very pretentious and snob. I remember he wrote extensively about this anecdote with Pauline Kael many years ago and I thought he was being very humble but, well, I remember that years later Twitter interpreted it in the worst way possible saying he was trying to force old Kael to like his film,
If that was the case, why would he be so sincere and admit she hated it! I mean she was dead by when he wrote that piece (about how much he admired her), he could had easily ignored her comments to him! Or fabricating that she loved it! Lol
Anyway, I think Film Twitter is full of bullies!
”We loved making it,” Anderson says. “We loved working with Benedict Cumberbatch and the wonderful Ben Kingsley and Dev Patel and our old friend Ralph Fiennes. For this movie we needed actors who could take pages of text and bring them to life. Some actors are great at moments, but you would not ask them to go perform this play on stage. It’s not their thing. Their thing may be spontaneity, but it’s a different kind of work. English actors tend to be able to do everything. At the last play I watched in the West End, I sat down at the end to make a list of names on the playbill.

“I wanted to be like Spike Lee,” he says. “He’s one of the reasons why I became a film-maker. I was so inspired by She’s Gotta Have It. And I read his book Spike Lee’s Gotta Have It back in 1987. I tried my best to just follow his roadmap, which didn’t work at all. I didn’t even get into NYU. So I had to find another way.”

Anderson grew up in Houston, in Texas, the son of a writer and an archaeologist. He was a huge fan of Dahl and of the New Yorker film critic Pauline Kael. (He organised a private screening of his movie Rushmore for the critic on the eve of her retirement. Her response? “Did the people who gave you the money read the script?”)
