We watched this last night and both of us enjoyed it much more than Spencer. It wasn't "Oscar worthy " but it was a thoroughly enjoyable entertaining film. Nothing earthshaking but just a great way to spend a rainy afternoon.
The writing was clever enough (but not brilliant) and Clooney's direction was smooth as silk. I'm not a big fan of Ben Affleck but he did an adequate job in his role. The child actor Daniel Ranieri was very good as the youngest version of the main character, but I was glad they moved the story along to focus on his college days.
The actor who acted rings around all the others was Christopher Lloyd (of Back to the Future fame). He was absolutely remarkable as the grandfather! Even in a supporting role he stood out as a complex character above all others.
The biggest disappointment was the actress who played the mother. Not only was she flat, I don't know why they made the decision to not "age" her like the rest of the cast! By the end of the movie she looked young enough to be the sister of the protagonist!
Anyway, it didn't ruin the story for me, but it was strange.
It isn't a "big" story, it doesn't have a particularly "woke" theme, but since it was about a lower-middle class boy who decides to be a writer from a very early age and later goes on to be a successful Pulitzer prize winning journalist, both Dan and I related to it in a personal way.
