I hope it repeats at Bafta and Oscars.

It seems both Berger and the film won the BAFTAS! I already saw a cynical tweet about it! 😉
Good for Berger. I hope he doesn’t receive a lot of flack. He did a good work and Patrick Melrose is still a masterpiece! Better than a lot of acclaimed films.

OT but it seems Austin Butler won best actor! Lol I predicted an Academy win for him ages ago after I watched Elvis. No, I wasn’t blinded by his acting talents at all but a) he was very charismatic and pretty; b) that’s your typical bio performance loved by Academy voters: more imitation than depth; c) it seems Academy and BAFTA voters really like young actors in very frivolous bios in recent years: Eddie Redmayne, Rami Malek and probably now Butler.
Also, I hate how BAFTA voters went for the Americans last year and this one when their own British/Irish actors won the acclaim and the awards by professional critics. But well, they aren’t know for refined tastes and it’s their own silly award so…

The film won cinematography, adapted screenplay, sound, score, director, best film not in English, best film. I like that they awarded Berger.I didn't watch the movie yet but I followed the Bafta wins on AW and they hated on him so much that I was rooting for him.

It probably is not the best film in competition. I don’t know, I haven’t watched most of the movies but it’s a very good old fashioned movie. Certainly it’s much better than CODA! Berger is a much better filmmaker, too.
There is a lot of hate against well made conventional films but it’s even more perplexing (or maybe not! I mean they actually don’t care about films. It’s just about the competition and the pretty dresses!) when they also care so much about the conventional awards! Of course, those voters would go most of the time for the conventional thing! Nothing bad with that! Just it’s preferable that it’s a good conventional film instead of something mediocre or bad! But it’s their award and they could give it to CODA if they want! 😉
The hype and backlash is just very annoying! They really don’t care about films when they treat movies like that!

I follow Walter Shaw on Twitter. I hate the movies he loves but that doesn’t diminish my respect for him, or my alignment with him on a number of levels regarding his criticism. He’s a brilliant man, knows what he’s talking about, and he lives 30 miles away, haha. But apparently his knowledgeable opinion is worth the same amount as some rando on Twitter who’s never heard of, I dunno, FW Murnau, lol.
I knew Austin Butler would win, too. It’s exactly the splashy, flashy kind of nostalgic performance the awards shows love. I’m sure he’ll take the Oscar, too, since he’s now got the GG and the BAFTA for it.

It’s a good performance but not very depth or complex. He is very charismatic, tho. And it helps a lot! As it helps that it’s a “splashy, flashy and nostalgic” performance!
I “knew” he would win but you never know for sure until really know the competition! But yeah, it was a similar role/performance than Malek’s Freddie Mercury. Colin Farrell is the critic’s favorite and his movie did very well but we know that doesn’t necessarily works at the end. Brendan Fraser was hyped a lot but I don’t think his movie was so well received and even when Oscar loves a good comeback story, I’m not sure he was ever very respected as actor. He was always good and very talented for comedy but probably too pretty and with a taste for very commercial stuff.
I also “predicted” Will Smith! Not when I watched his movie but when I knew he had a Williams sister’s father movie competing against BC’s TPOTD. I remember I wrote here that not way BC would win against a black superstar who never won an Oscar playing a famous man! Then I proceeded to ignore my own comment and thinking how the Academy had changed so much that only the fair result was possible! So wrong! Lol

Yes, it’s not very complex or insightful. They substituted raw emotional pain for that, like when his mom dies, not to mention all the made up stuff with Col. Parker.
I’ve been rooting for Colin Ferral but once the initial flush of love for Banshees passed, it seems it will also pass by the major awards. Although he’s picked up a few critical awards, so that’s nice.
I haven’t seen Whale so I can’t comment on Brendan’s performance, although he has a soft spot in my heart. I was crushing on him so bad back in his George of the Jungle days (who wasn’t? My god what a body!), but then his career took a turn into silly comic/cartoon adaptations and I just couldn’t anymore. He showed so much potential in Gods & Monsters. I guess now we know what happened there.
I’ve given up on the major awards after what they did to BC last year. I’m still angry about it, lol.
