They don’t like the people getting together and fomenting distrust of the systems in a liberal way. How’s that for a conspiracy theory?

I doubt they would disappear but I’m very pessimistic and I think they influence isn’t good at all. They all are about disinformation, delusion and manipulation. And the ways governments try to control their bad influence just make things even worse.
The best explanation I have read about the phenomenon isn’t about they being right wingers or left wingers but about they being some kind of privatization of social intersections in just a few sites moderated by a very few all powerful people. Internet was much better when communities themselves controlled their own speeches in forums like this one. There were extremist forums, of course, but they were a bubble with very few people that almost no one could see. Now everyone is in the same site little site and any crazy idea could be seen by all and it is quickly confronted by the opposite frequently also crazy idea and then you have this totally crazy discussion being treated like something mainstream even when almost no one in the real world thinks like that! It still has a huge influence over politics and journalists. It’s just insane!
And by the way, it’s not a surprise that the coolest social media site nowadays is the worst! And that it’s the one beloved by the self-righteous youngsters: TikTok. I mean Musk, Zuckerberg and company are bad but no way they are worse, not even combined, than the China government! Like c’mon! They are the contemporary “fascists”, “colonialists”, “imperialists” and even “slave owners” that young kids say they fight against. That’s the big irony of social media activism! It’s all about projection! That’s the site I would never will join in. And I’m not a purist I have bought some products that I later discovered were by companies owned by the China government but a social media site linked to the China government especially designed to attract kids? No, thanks! It’s extremely creepy.

I tried TicTok for about 2 hours and it was terrible! Not even the virtue signaling and political garbage opinions by young people who have no critical thinking skills, but it felt like some horrible psychedelic ADHD experience, lol. Everything was so fast and too colorful, jumping around in edits of nanoseconds, made no sense, and waaaay too loud. I’m getting so old, haha. But to me it was unwatchable.

TicTok seems (from the little I've seen of it) seems very frenzied.
But I can't stand any jiggly, wobbly cameras or loud harsh sounds. Even its out of focus logo irritates me, never mind the content!
And why the hell is it so small on the screen? That vertical format is frustrating!
The whole thing just turns me off.
I'm obviously not their target audience!

When a TikTok shows up on Twitter, I feel a panic and scramble to close it before that awful logo and sound come up!

I'm not on Twitter but I'm wondering if people are really going to migrate to Threads now. Has Elon irritated enough people that they'd be dumb enough to consolidate the majority of their social media presence under Zuck's Meta?

I have a Twitter account but I never post. I just read stuff. I’m such an infrequent user that I haven’t noticed the impact of Musk’s ownership yet. But it does seem that the Meta alternative is attracting significant numbers. But that may just be out of initial curiosity. It will be interesting to see how may stay and how many more join in the longer term.

I rarely post anything on Twitter (maybe if I get a decent wordle score!), so any changes haven’t impacted me, either. But I do go on Twitter a lot during the day to read what other people post. Other than there being millions of ads now, it seems pretty much the same to me.
