Back when everyone kept recommending Lucifer to me, I did give it a try. I think I watched a couple of episodes, but it just didn’t hold my interest enough for me to keep watching it. It really did seem like something I should have liked!

This weekend I binged Dear Child (Liebes Kind) a German mini-series. There are 6 episodes about 45 min each.
It's watchable although it's not perfect. It's a thriller. Warning: although it's not shown there is sexual abuse and, although to me it isn't that graphic, there is also selfharm and an attempted suicide.
The basic plot is about a woman who was kidnapped and was kept prisoner with her two children. She escapes but then everything isn't exactly what it seems to be and there are different twists along the series.
The acting is good.
It has some issues but I don't want to spoil it. Also, even with those issues, is watchable as I said.
I recommend watching in German because, according to comments I read, the dubbing isn't good.

I watched Dear Child a while back, and I guess I forgot to mention it here! I watched it dubbed into English, so I have no idea if it was accurate.
The whole time I watched it, I kept thinking that I’ve seen it done - and done better - before. I know they put in a different twist, but it didn’t feel like they justified taking 6 episodes to tell the story. Pretty much every police/drama tv show has done similar stories, and of course there have been movies too. So what was really “different” here was dragging it out. They did keep me interested, though, so I did watch the entire thing to see how it ended.
Since watching it, I’ve read a number of Netflix articles explaining stuff about the series and answering questions that people have about the ending. The most interesting thing I read was that the child actors were given a completely different script so that they didn’t know what the series was actually about. That made me so happy to hear! They were told that the “father” was being overly strict because he wanted to protect his family from bad stuff happening to them. And even the adult actors used that same alternate script when filming scenes with the children.
The question I had that I haven’t seen answered is: what happened to the nurse? She went home, her power was off, then she’s dead? I don’t get it.

The nurse was killed by the guy when he saw she was going to tell the police that Hannah talked to him through the camera.
I have other problems with the story.
First, the incompetence of the police when searching for the place where the woman and girl have come from. It took them a lot of time to found it.
Then, considering it was a NATO compound and the place was full of bombs how is it that there is no investigation on people who could have access to bombs, to the compound and knew how to install the cameras, the bombs, the bomb connected to the WiFi, or a proper investigation of the security firm? Anyway i was invested in the story and I have no problem with the pace till the fourth or fifth episodes. The end Do you think Hannah wanted the guy to be killed? That she/they had planned it all?

Now that you mention it, did they ever explain why the previous Lena’s, after the original, were killed? They explained why this last one was allowed to live (Hannah liked her stories), but the others? Are we supposed to think that Hannah got tired of them and ordered them dead? Or did they, too, try to escape and were shot or something?

Last night, I attempted to watch the Fall of the House of Usher, and it was awful! I had no idea what was happening. Was it supposed to be scary? Or funny? In any case, all the characters were vulgar and unlikable.
I also recently watched the movie Love at First Sight, and it was ok. It was a pretty standard romcom and nothing special. It felt like it was going to be special, but ended up kind of blah. I also found the music annoying, and I just didn’t like the character of Hadley at all.
I binge-watched S3 of Turkish series The Tailor, and it was terrific! It’s gone way off course now, with almost nothing to do with the dressmaking business, but by now I’m obsessed with the characters so I’ll watch anything they do!
And this isn’t on Netflix, but S5 of Fargo began last night with two episodes. It is SO GOOD! It stars Juno Temple, and she’s great! This time, they’re sort of following the plot of the original movie, but with little twists. There’s also Jon Hamm as the bad guy, and Jennifer Jason Leigh plays Juno Temple’s awful mother-in-law. I wonder if they discussed what it was like working with Benedict? Ha!

So , for Fargo, are they putting up 2 episodes at a time, or was that just to whet everyone's appetite?

Fargo is on the FX channel here, so I don’t know how they release the episodes in other places. They had first two episodes, back to back, this week, and I just checked and they’re doing the same thing with the third and fourth episodes next week.

We just finished the Netflix limited series All The Light We Cannot See.
It was a mixed bag for me. I mean it was entertaining, sort of. And there was historical fact buried deep in a convoluted plot.
But...
First, Mark Ruffalo was terribly miscast. I've seen him in things like Foxcatcher and Spotlight and thought he was great in them, but he was totally distracting in this role. His "French man" was horrible. Stilted, whispering, expressionless. I could go on but suffice it to say, it was horrendous!
Second, the writing was juvenile. Sometimes I thought I was watching a adaptation of a novel meant for teenagers. No characters had any complexity. The girl was a SAINT! The boy's personality was mush. The Nazis were cardboard caricatures. Of course Nazis are "baddies" but they were cartoon baddies!
Third, the whole plot about the cursed stone was cartoonish. And the gems looked like something from a video game.
The acting of the young blind girl in the lead was all right. Better than the young male lead.
And the child actress who played her as a little girl was excellent.
Hugh Laurie was wasted under tons of makeup and a phony French accent.
I was expecting so much more from this series. I mean - Steven Knight, for heaven sakes! Peaky Blinders, Amazing Grace and Eastern Promises.
The other Netflix production was FAR superior - Nyad. Jodie Foster and Annette Benning were super in their roles. The special effects were good but not overwhelming. The other actors were all very good in their roles. The writing was mature with real complexity to the characters. Benning's character was soooo irritating at times and yet you really felt for her! And Foster! She's such a natural actor!
And, although the movie was long, it flowed nicely and the structure kept you guessing as to the plot.
And I liked that it was a story about aging but not about being aged! It showed the limitations, and what real determination can do.
And it was heartfelt without being maudlin or overly sentimental.
Very much the superior material and execution to the first one!
