Last night I finished watching Who is Erin Carter? It’s not at all the type of show I like, so I don’t know why Netflix thought I might like it - and I kind of did!
There’s lots of violence that most people might find exciting, but those scenes were actually so boring to me. The story is about a young British woman (Erin Carter), living in Spain with her husband and daughter. She’s a school teacher, but she has mysterious past where she trained in elaborate, acrobatic fighting. Ha!
The violence and fighting were the cartoonish kind that you’d probably find in any action movie (I’m guessing!). There’s lots of blood, but no one seems to get seriously hurt - unless they get killed. It made no sense whatsoever that Erin could be picked up and smashed head-first into a door, and then barely has a few cuts and scratches. How could her husband not see her body covered in bruises after one of those fights? I only have to bump into a table and I have a green and purple bruise on my leg for days!
I found the story interesting enough to keep watching it until the end. They ended it in a way that it might continue with more episodes. If it does and if I watch it, I will fast-forward through the fight scenes. They are pointless and boring.
What really annoyed me about the series, though, was the picture that Netflix uses to list it. It’s not Erin Carter, but a male character who doesn’t show up until more than half-way through the episodes. Maybe he’s a famous actor that we’re supposed to recognize?
The other annoying thing is when Erin’s clueless husband becomes suspicious and starts asking her if she’s hiding something. When she finally decides to tell him the truth about her daughter, the exchange goes something like this:
Husband: Erin, I know you’re hiding something from me. Tell me the truth!
Wife (who’s hiding lots and lots of things from him, including her identity): Ok. I’m not Harper’s real mum.
Husband: So you adopted her?
Wife: No.
Husband: You just took her?
Wife: Yes.
Husband (getting up from the table): How could you do something like that??
Wife: Please, wait! Let me explain!
Husband: It’s like I don’t even know you! I can never trust you again! (Storms off)
So first he begs her to tell him the truth, and then refuses to even listen to her. It’s infuriating! And we (the audience) know that the rest of her secrets are much, much worse than the truth about her daughter!
They seem to be living happily ever after at the end, so I guess he forgave everything.
