Dan and I have started watching the YouTube videos of this old TV programme.
It's fascinating!
So far, we've seen a lot of episodes from the 50s and early to mid-60s.
What a different time!!
Not only is the banter between the panel and the moderator very erudite and clever but the list of the big, BIG name celebrities that came on the show was very impressive.
Some things seem so dated - like the "wolf whistles" everytime any young female came on as a contestant! The women panelists wore formal gowns and even evening gloves and the occasional tiara! The men stood up to greet a female contestant and wore suits and neckties.
Arlene Francis, Dorothy Kilgallen, Bennett Cerf and the guest panelists - Gore Vidal, Steve Allen, Tony Randall, Paul Anka, etc.
Even the old commercials are eye openers into the culture of the time. The cigarette ads! And the car ads trying to appeal to women but showing that buying a Mustang would get you a husband!
I was young when I watched the very early episodes with my mum and dad (it was on Sunday night so I was allowed to watch it).
The wit of the panelists was brilliant!
