These comments are interesting,
He clearly looked miscast in the trailer but the pair of reviews I read praised him a lot! It could be that critics are just enamored with him because he kinda say the “right thing” (don’t want to make comic book movies, really want to be associated with Scorsese and other great names in the business, etc.) or that maybe the character he plays is not the “classic” Willy Wonka: one of the reviews said he was actually playing the “Charlie” role here. You know, the innocent good kid not the mysterious eccentric and slightly menacing chocolate fabric owner; and that the movie is entertaining and good but very far away of the usual Dahl darkness and cruelty. Maybe just maybe this is a film for much little kids or at least more “sensitive” kids and the everyday good kid persona of Chalamet fits perfectly because of it.
Anyway, I also saw someone saying that Wes Anderson should had directed this because it was just like one of his films and again, if the “harmlessness” is true, they are again misinterpreting Anderson: even “Fantastic Mr. Fox” which was more “for kids” than the “Henry Sugar” shorts, wasn’t so “innocent” and contained a lot of Dahl’s typical cruelty. Also and, of course, he DID his own Dahl adaptations this year and I hate that Netflix didn’t did enough promotion but everyone should watch them!

I can't get excited about this movie. I don't think I'll watch it, regardless of how critically acclaimed it may end up being. I'd rather go back to the original. I'll be interested in your thoughts when you guys watch it, though. You often manage to change my stance.

I think it’s silly for critics to say that the movie is better for very young children because TC is less sinister. The whole appeal of the original movie was that different age groups got something different out of it. When I watched it when I was older, I thought that snarky and sarcastic Gene Wilder was hilarious. The ridiculous things he told the kids were only questioned by the parents.
I’ve now seen a million trailers for the new movie, and I have to admit that the rest of the cast looks wonderful, but TC is so unappealing to me that I won’t be able to watch it when it comes out.

TBF some people said the same about The Grinch. That it was “harmless” and for young children although to be fair they weren’t comparing it to the original source but to the horrible Jim Carrey’s version! lol
Dahl was always disturbing and dark but I guess there is nothing wrong for little kids to have their own “nice” version.
By the way, I’m not sure that the two reviews were exactly rave for the film itself. One of them practically said it was forgettable! But both were very nice toward Chalamet and, in general, all the actors in it.

Did anyone watch Graham Norton last week? He had Chalamet on to promote Wonka and get this lineup, Cher, Julia Roberts, and Tom Hanks. TC looked like a toddler, lol! They did mention the Dylan pic coming up but no mention of BC, and mostly it was Julia telling looooong stories that weren’t very funny, but at one point Tom pulled some money out of his pocket and asked TC to run out and get them sandwiches, haha! Best bit of the evening. Everyone was very kind to him but he seemed completely out of his element, even when discussing his own work in Wonka.

The audience liked it.
The following comment is from a Timmy (super) fan but she's generally very reasonable. Haha

Our newspaper posted a review one day this week (I don’t remember where it was from), and they sounded pretty blah about it. They did recommend it, saying that little kids would enjoy it. They described TC as “charismatic” (really??) - the only positive thing they said about him. Because a lot of the same actors were in Paddington, it’s getting a lot of positive comparisons that maybe it doesn’t deserve.
At the very end of the review, they mention Wes Anderson’s short films on Netflix (but they didn’t name the films), suggesting WA’s stories are more of RD had in mind.

Dylan’s voice isn’t “traditionally good” but it’s also definitely not “sweet” or “soothing” neither. Actually, the attractiveness on his voice is its roughness and, supposedly, authenticity.
In the book the movie is based on, some critics loved him because it and were more cynical about the much more pleasant and trained voices of people like Joan Baez and Pete Seeger. They thought he was the real deal. A real salt on earth working class guy. Of course, it was all a huge lie! lol He is still a huge liar! He was just a very middle class Jewish kid who liked to tell crazy stories.
I am wondering about the rumored David Byrne song for a new Roal Dahl movie. It wasn’t on the Wes Anderson shorts so is in this one?

I think that Wonka is having the same kind of criticism that The Grinch had. It isn't a new adaptation of the book. It's a new story with the same character. In the case of Wonka, as Simon Farnaby says on twitter, it is a prequel.
I discovered that Simon Farnaby -Julian in Ghosts- was tweeting about Wonka and I thought it was because he has a role in it. Charlotte Ritchie (Alison), Mathew Baynton (Thomas) are in it too. Well, Simon Farnaby is also co-writer of Wonka. That's why he's been so active promoting the movie.
I hadn't read all the posts in this thread and I just found this one. TBF some people said the same about The Grinch. Exactly.

I just rewatched The Grinch today. It isn’t a new story. It’s the original story, but fleshed out and expanded. It’s very sweet, but the Grinch does do mean things to people. He steals Christmas!
I just don’t like TC. If he wasn’t in Wonka, I would absolutely go see it.
(The review I read said that the Wonka character can’t read, which RD would not have approved)
