Just wondering what everyone's thoughts are on the way Ozempic is being used, both in celeb circles and in the wider world.
Everyone's turning to it like it's some quick fix diet pill -and it's clearly very effective as one, even if that's not what it's intended for- but I'm seeing loads of people around me who don't have much weight to lose turning to it. I'm not convinced that's a good idea and I wonder what kind of complications it may trigger in those people. However, I do love that it's helping those who are in the obese category who may not be able to get rid of the weight otherwise for a multitude of reasons. If it helps them stave off diabetes, get more mobility and generally a better quality of life, then I'm all for it.
What are your thoughts?

I don't know anyone who is taking it for weight loss but my older sister (her name is Donna) was prescribed it for her diabetes. She has lost a LOT of weight but it does play havoc with your bowels.
Apparently that sorts itself out after a while.
My other sis (the one who had the recent brain tumor) had bariatric surgery for her weight and it didn't come without life changing consequences, but it did work for her weight and added YEARS to her life!
Personally I don't think this new drug should be used in a frivolous manner (like getting rid of 10 pounds for bikini season) but if someone's obese then it could be a life saving tool to use.
And for diabetics it is definitely something to consider.
I wouldn't personally use it though until a few more years of research have gone by. I have asked Dan if he would consider asking his doctor about using it for his diabetes and he said he'd think about it. He's on a LOT of drugs at the moment for his diabetes and they have definite side effects! Use of ozempic would eliminate most of them.

And for diabetics it is definitely something to consider. Pretty much exactly how I feel about it. I'm all for people who need it using it, be they diabetics or in need of weight loss intervention (like someone who has mobility issues so cannot exercise, or someone who cannot afford healthier food options, or doesn't have access to bariatric surgery- just as random examples off the top of my head). It would drastically improve their quality of life and I'm all for that! It's the vanity crowd that worries me. Kim K isn't someone who needed this tool at all, yet here she is...and now 3 of my neighbours are on it because they've been "influenced" when I can tell you that they simply don't need to be. I worry for the long-term consequences of using this drug when you don't need to. He's on a LOT of drugs at the moment for his diabetes and they have definite side effects! Use of ozempic would eliminate most of them. That sounds promising. I hope the convo with his doc is fruitful, whatever he chooses in the end. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences.

If it helps them stave off diabetes, get more mobility and generally a better quality of life, then I'm all for it. Quoting myself because I just had a zoom call with someone who did exactly this! I had an old friend I'd lost touch with reach out to me and we just chatted for the first time in years. I genuinely didn't recognize her! She's been on Ozempic for a little over a year now and she has lost 6 stone! It's taken her out of the "morbidly obese" category!! She was prescribed it specifically for weight loss because she was too large for bariatric surgery and had become pretty immobile, relying on a mobility scooter to move around. She's now able to walk short distances comfortably and says she feels much more independent! It's so cool to see this drug transforming someone's life like this. To think that she has improved her health so much and regained her mobility in such a short time...it's incredible. Modern medicine is amazing. I'm still against already-skinny celebs recklessly promoting this as a diet hack to their impressionable following, but then I'm biased against the Kim Ks of this world so that may be playing into it. Hopefully the people who need these drugs can continue to have easy access to them and get a real shot at living healthier lives. She was so proud and confident as she was sharing her story and telling me how she's taking daily walks now. I want everyone to feel that way. Hope nobody minds me sharing this random story. It just left me buzzing. edit: typo

I’d heard that it has awful side effects like vomiting and diarrhoea in lots of people. Sounds like a high price to pay for weight loss. Stomach upsets are the worst!

I’d heard that it has awful side effects like vomiting and diarrhoea in lots of people. Sounds like a high price to pay for weight loss. Stomach upsets are the worst! So true! A grumpy tummy and toothache are equally horrid in my eyes. Funnily enough, she only had migraines and nausea for a couple of weeks and then her body adapted and that went away. I'm sure there are side effects (all medications have them) but it seems she got lucky. For this specific case, where she couldn't lose the weight on her own and was too large for bariatric surgery, it was a life-saving choice. If only I could convey how chuffed she was to be mobile again! Beyond that, I'm sure she's experiencing other health benefits but, she was so focused on her short walks that it was my only takeaway, lol. Also, I'm a bit slow. I'm only just now realizing that Jesse Plemons probably used Ozempic (I saw a comment on reddit). It never occurred to me! Edit: I really do hope there are no long-term complications from using it. My neighbours somehow got their hands on it and they really are not in the category that needs it, so it would be horrible if they sacrificed their health for a bit of vanity.
