Earlier I saw another tweet about this and forgot to post it.
Somebody should investigate Metacritic. I remember that Richard Lawson said on twitter that he hadn't put score to TPotD and someone on MT had rated it lower than other fils that Lawson had below TPotD.
Obviously its not the same as a PR firm paying "critics". No surprise. A critic is anyone with a blog or podcast.

Those sites are very silly. Of course, they don't mean anything!
About the article, I just want to comment that Siskel and Ebert are very beloved critics, especially Ebert. They did indeed a lot to popularize film criticism but their thumbs up and thumbs out system opened the door to review aggregators. It's just ridiculous to "judge" art with stars, thumbs, numbers or tomatos!

A few people went with the line about a pr firm "manipuling" the scores and now randoms are claiming that's why "audiences ratings" are the ones trustworthy! *facepal* Pathetic populism!
The problem is the system itself and, yes, in part how easily manipulated it is but, obviously, "audiences scores" are even much more easily to manipulated and that was "discovered" ages ago! People used to rate in mass movies that weren't released and, if they had read the piece they would had known that the pseudo measures RT took doesn't actually work because even when now that you supposedly need a ticket to vote, people still vote before the big movies are released because you can buy tickets months before the release. And that's just the easily visible! They seriously belive companies pay to "new" reviewers and blogs verified by RT but would never think on paying to randoms to vote in an open poll!
Patrick Melrose was bombarded with bad audiences RT reviews before it was aired after BC "dared" to say some pro-fair salaries for actresses stuff that went viral. And worse, some commenters seriously believed that the series wasn't connecting with audiences! That rating was before anyone watched the thing!
