I have seen a few people on Twitter and Facebook mentioning it reminds them to the Etan Patz case. The little boy who was kidnapped and murdered in New York and who inspired a lot of the protocols about missing children, I also have read people citing the case as the one that triggered the fear and over protection of fathers towards their kids in the following decades because it was the first time ever he walked alone to school and that “rite of passage” practically disappeared in the next generation because parents were just too scared.
I don’t know but I’m thinking that maybe Morgan indeed used the case for her script. Netflix says it’s based on a true story which it’s bonkers because it’s apparently about the delusions of an addict man who lose his kid but they also said that she was inspired by her experiences in New York in the 1980s so maybe she saw some of the heat around the case at the time (it actually happened in 1979 not 1985, tho. The series is set in 1985 because it’s also about AIDS and mole people)

The interesting part is that she isn’t very interested on the Emmy targeted also period miniseries showed immediately before Eric (it seems it’s not her thing) but was very excited about Eric. I hope this means that it will have a wide audience. The awful truth is that Netflix hits mostly dependent on how they present it on the site. Some shows are widely promoted to everyone on the site and others are just buried there.
