Someone saw this news? variety.com/2024/film/news/joaquin-phoenix-drops-out-todd-haynes-gay-romance-movie-1236101595/He just left the movie just a few days before shooting it! They are speculating if it’s because the gay scenes but he actually wrote them! It could be that someone recommended him not to do them but why listened to them when it was something so imminent? Of course, there are dumb kids claiming that this is the reason why gay actors MUST be cast for gay roles and demanding they cast one of them for this but that’s actually a great example of how social media is in such a small bubble and don’t see beyond their eyes. Again, Phoenix was the driven force behind this project so without him, there is not a “gay project” to begin (his idea and he co-wrote it) but most important the invested money was because him. That’s why people gave money to the production so a random but daring random gay actor= no project and not money. Actually, a daring random straight actor also no project nor money! Still, how irresponsible of him! Someone said that he has always been a “volatile” actor but that’s not an excuse. Apparently, they will lost a lot of money so at least there is a huge reason no one is talking about, it talks very bad of him as a professional.

I'd be interested in hearing his reason for dropping out before forming an opinion. It could be as simple as a scheduling conflict. Or he might have realized that the movie was going to be terrible and no longer wanted to do it.

The issue is that he had the idea for this movie, co-wrote it and asked to a respected filmmaker to direct it. They got the financing thanks to his name then they hired crew people (who apparently hasn’t been paid yet) and five days before shooting it with all hired people already doing their jobs, he abandoned it.
It’s not like someone leaving a random project in an amicable way because a scheduling issue. His name was totally attached to it and he had other people working on it and he just abandoned it and let them literally paying for the broken dishes. A similar example would be if BC had decided at last minute to abandon the Hamlet play when Marvel first offered him the Dr. Strange role.
Also Todd Haynes is a very important filmmaker. Even a bad film by him would be an auteur film (and again it was Phoenix idea!). He is a very independent and suffering artist, by the way! I remember that in the book about Miramax, it was frequently mentioned that he was bullied by Weinstein and that he is a very sensitive man so it wasn’t easy for him. I really feel bad for him.
EDITED I think I’m a case like this, the only good excuse would be something major like an illness or an accident. It was something imminent with pre-production finished and everyone working just for him.

The whole thing does sound odd, even for him.
Maybe it's all part of an elaborate publicity stunt?

I don’t know. It would be pretty odd for a publicity stunt especially if there are workers waiting for their salary in Guadalajara! Phoenix has a past doing odd publicity stunts, tho. But this would be too much!
He seems even more capricious than Jared Leto (someone posted a quote by Jacques Audiard saying something about him below the post by the producer of Todd Haynes film but it was in French and I didn’t made an effort to translate it! lol) and TBF Leto seems to be joking a lot of the times. I am probably wrong but I had the impression that he just exaggerates his eccentricities on set just to amuse himself.

I found an article on a local Jalisco (Guadalajara) newspaper, they say that the movie was indeed about to film when it was stopped and that it had applied for some local government initiatives. They were informed that it was postponed because some schedule conflicts with the actor but later, the producers, told them that they won’t do it and won’t applied for the initiative money, www.mural.com.mx/joaquin-phoenix-abandona-grabacion-en-jalisco-por-agenda/ar2854995They also said that it was totally because the actor and that the local government and the producers are happy with each other and hope to work in other projects.
