People are not just one thing. He had passed through lots of things since the accident. His hands had been hurt. It was natural that he wanted to help the dog.

There is a definite affinity between him and the dog: at this point he is kind of a beaten dog too. And it made more sense that Mordo got interested in him after witnessing the scene with the dog.

I so agree! This little scene gave so much more depth to his character, told why Mordo was interested in him, and also explored why some folks still communicate with animals when their faith in humanity has been let down.

A few other websites have posted that video, and they all seem to agree that the movie would have been better with the dog scene and Doctor Strange being a more likeable character earlier in the movie. But Scott Derrickson found him too likeable at that point, so the scene was cut. I think that's probably due to Benedict being such a likeable person that SD was Cumberbatched!

By Jove, I think you are onto something Mllemass! I loved that scene with the dog too, but I have to go with SD on this one. You want to have the audience have to grow to like Strange as the movie progresses and he slowly becomes less self-absorbed and more selfless to the world around him. The dog scene was too early and although it did present a complexity of character it could be a bit confusing in a less than 2 hour film. Now maybe it could be argued that the film should have been about a half an hour longer and then I would say - put in that dog scene!!! Maybe just put it in a bit later on, after Strange has begun his cathartic journey. I think that while BC can act cruel, cold, even creepy if the need be for a role, it is difficult for any sane person who spends any real time around him to view him to be totally unlikable because being "Cumberbatched" is a very real and deadly virus that is unavoidable! :-))

Magda, have you ever watched Rin Tin Tin? He was an amazing dog actor! He got shot in some movie, and his crawling along the ground, wincing and sad doggy eyes, while trying to save his puppies (PUPPIES!) from being stolen, was really fantastic. There's a reason he was one of the favorite actors in Hollywood in the 20s. He could emote better than a lot of humans, lol.

I heard about it but I don't remember watching. I'll search internet. Some days ago I watch an ancient program which has on the leader role the father of Jeff and Beau Bridges. I didn't know their parent was an actor.
I just checked there were lots of Rin Tin Tin's.
