I had a silly idea re the "unlike anything done before" role, but the conversation about that is buried somewhere else, so thought I'd start a separate thread for it. Do we think whatever it was, that he said he's "probably going to take", will be announced soon? There was conversation before about "whatever" being a musical, because he did say long ago that he'd like to do one, and that would certainly fit the never having done anything similar before description. The problem with that was that there didn't seem to be anything in the offing with what might be a really credible prospective role for him. But I just saw an article about the film of a musical that's suddenly apparently coming out of the development hell that it's been in for years, and the silly thought just jumped into my head. This is a musical that could theoretically have a role that it's credible he could have been offered, "Joe". I'm sure my silly thought is probably complete nonsense, but I thought I would mention it anyway. I'm not sure what I would really think about it, even if it was a proper rumour rather than just a spurious thought that occurred to me, but the musical in question is "Sunset Boulevard" and they're talking about production in January. Joe Gillis from the original movie is a good role but yes, I don't know how I feel about it! Also I hope he do the Luca Guadagnino movie early next year. He also confirmed it in the same Q&A but didn't confirmed any date.
EDITED: Also the genre is different but an alcoholic tormented writer probably is not so alien to him. We have talk about a lot of alcoholics today!

We have talk about a lot of alcoholics today! I hope he's doing the Luca Guadagnino movie too, but doing one wouldn't necessarily preclude the other. And irrespective of my spurious speculation, I think the role BC talked about as unlike any other doesn't necessarily mean a different genre, per se. If there were to be a musical involved of any variety, for instance, just that it would be a singing role would make it unlike any other. But in actual fact that description of Joe Gillis as an alcoholic tormented writer isn't entirely right anyway. I don't think there's anything to suggest Joe was supposed to be an alcoholic, and if he was, it's not material to the story. He was just demoralised at his lack of success and financially desperate to start with. The interesting thing re the story (the original film anyway) is that it's set up so that one supposes to start with that it's the character of Joe who's abusing trust and taking advantage of the vulnerable older woman, whereas in fact that presumption is turned on its head and Joe is the victim rather than the abuser.

I didn't see Gillis as an alcoholic. He was a weary, cynical, down on his luck Hollywood writer who lived on the faded edges of Tinseltown. Yes, there was a lot of drinking in the movie, but there was *always* a lot of drinking in the movies back then, especially noir. Alcoholics back then were mostly played as shaking booze hounds, ala Lost Weekend, because people thought drinking that much was a moral failure, not a disease.

Yes, maybe I was mixed the two Billy Wilder's characters. Not that I remembered Gillis as someone so lost like The Lost Weekend protagonist!

I'd love to see him play a tough police detective like he did when he was on Jimmy Fallon and they did the Mad Lib Theater. It has more than 13 million views on YouTube - way more than any of the other Mad Lib videos. Here it is again, in case you've forgotten it:
