I’ve never seen Lost in Translation, but I do remember when it came out. I was disgusted by the idea of yet another old man/teenage girl romcom. Even if that’s not quite what happens in the movie, it was certainly advertised that way. And it was even more disturbing to me that a woman had made the movie and not some old man trying to live out a creepy fantasy,

It’s a fantasy but from the point of view of a young woman infatuated with a funny old has been. The “romance” is just impossible so it actually doesn’t happen anything and Bill Murray is mostly a father figure explaining to the young girl that life is is fucked up but that you just have to go on.
Johansson’s character is supposedly a twenty something married woman in it and she looked the part (I think Giovanni Ribisi played the absent husband) but in real life, she was only a 17 years old.

I watched it once & didn’t get it. I was bored beyond belief & never understood what all the hoopla was about. I love Bill Murray as much as the next person, but 🤷🏻♀️ And SJ has never been my fav actress. I think she’s wooden. 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️
Won’t be the last time I don’t “get” a movie liked by the posh critic set, lol.

I liked it but I remember Japan wasn’t happy with it and I understand why. It’s mostly about two Americans feeling alienated and having existential crisis in a foreign exotic country in which people just behave bizarrely. So everyone else apart of the two main characters were nasty Americans (the husband, the pop singer) or odd non-Americans (Every Japanese character in it).
Murray’s character was in a middle of a middle age crisis and seeing how his career is crashing meanwhile Johansson’s is a practically abandoned young wife who is finding difficult to navigate into adulthood. They meet, have some innocent fun together and deeply talk about life and their fears. At the end they continue with their own separate and very different lives.

No, I got that. I just didn’t see the point of all that wandering around. 😂

Sometimes I do, too, but not that one for some reason. It’s a good thing there’s so many movies to choose from. Something for everyone. ☺️

Lost in Translation is the furthest thing from an "old man/teenage girl romcom" I can think of, so I don't know why it would have been advertised that way. Maybe for the same reason TPOTD just can't seem to catch an accurate descriptive summation to save its soul - it's a complex, thoughtful film with complicated themes that defy a snappy outline or soundbite.
Sofia Coppola not only was the director, but also the writer and co-producer, so this really was totally her film from beginning to end.
And I can't think of anyone else who could have explored the introspective themes in this film, with such insights and composure. There isn't the slightest hint of creepiness in this film - it's too emotionally intense to be sluffed off as that kind of fare. In fact, I think SC actually may have taken people's expectations of such "creepiness" and turned it entirely on its head!
It's intimacies are deep and certainly not tawdry in any way. The landscapes of disconnect are not only geographical (and the setting of Japan is perfect as the "strange land") but also ones of distancing oneself from any emotional involvement (both Murray's and Johansson's characters have totally isolated themselves from forming relationships that aren't guarded and filled with rote responses).
And, thankfully, the movie was not only a critical success but also did excellent $$$ in the financials. It was made for mere $4 million and its BO was nearly $20 million.

From the Wikipedia page for the movie:
.
Even here they suggest that there is a romance between the mid-life-crisis guy and the young recent college graduate, which is what I always thought the movie was about. But if it isn’t, I may give it a try some time!

I may have to try it again, too. Now that I have smart people here who can explain it to me. 😂😉🙏🏻
