I'm just watching The Martian for the second time. The first time was on Netflix, but now it's on tv. I like it a lot and I wish I'd seen it at the movies when it came out.
It has a very impressive all-star cast, several of whom have a connection to Benedict. Both Chiwetel Ejiofor and Benedict Wong are in it, as well as Jonathan Aris - Anderson from Sherlock - with an American accent here.
And another actress looked familiar so I looked her up: she's Mackenzie Davis, who I just watched last night in San Junipero.

I really liked The Martian. We saw it at the cinema because we really love seeing a big sci-fi production on the big screen (all the Star Trek movies, Gravity, Arrival, etc.). It's their natural environment that they were meant to be seen in I think.
Although I am not a fan of all his movies, generally I do really like a lot of MD's work. And The Talented Mr. Ridley is one of my all time favourite movies.

For me, it helps that he just seems like such a nice guy. That's the reason I stay away from Ben Affleck movies - I think he's a jerk.

Aren't Matt Damon and the Affleck brothers like really best friends?

From anything I have read about them, it appears they are very close friends (and collaborators for a number of projects).
I don't really want to delve that closely into actors' personalities if I am only mildly interested in them. I have seen a number of Damon films and those that I have seen I usually liked a lot. I don't seek them out though usually - it's just that he does make films that I have an interest in going to see. Same for Ben Affleck's movies. I don't care enough about him to delve into his personal details and I would never go to or avoid a movie because of his name being associated with it. Most of the time I would have to say I just am not interested in the films of Ben Affleck because of the material. A couple I liked though - Gone girl was OK and I liked Good Will Hunting. But some of his movies I despise - Argo for one!
Damon on the other hand - I like a lot more of his films. Good Will Hunting is a really good movie, The Talented Mr. Ripley is a big fav of mine, the "Oceans" movies... I like them a lot, Saving Private Ryan was very good, Syrianna is another favourite movie of mine, Che is a masterpiece of a movie and he was a part of that, The Good Shepard, the "Bourne" movies are good popcorn fare, and I really liked "Promise Land", Invictus, and Contagion. But some of his films are outright stinkers IMO - Elycium, Interstellar, The Great Wall, The Monuments Men, and a few others.
I just noticed that I probably have seen more Matt Damon movies than I ever intended because I am a HUGE fan of Steven Soderbergh and Damon has been associated with him for many projects. Soderbergh is someone who I would definitely seek out to see a movie of!

This is completely shallow of me, but I really enjoy the fake feud Matt's got going with Jimmy Kimmel. I find it hilarious, especially the couples counseling bits.

It's been so long since I've seen the ending of a Jimmy Kimmel episode that I didn't realize he was still doing that "Apologies to Matt Damon. We ran out of time" bit. It's so silly and funny!
I have to say that I don't go looking into Ben Affleck's (or any other actor's) personal life. I only see it when it gets thrown in my face. Some people have bad reputations and I do avoid their work.

Gone girl was OK and I liked Good Will Hunting. But some of his movies I despise - Argo for one! I really liked Gone Girl as well, and Good Will Hunting is honestly one of my all-time favorite movies. But yes, Argo, argh! It was infuriating. It was framed like your typical Hollywood thriller with the brave Americans saving the day when the reality was that the CIA plot was barely relevant and the Canadians did most of the actual extraction. I love The Martian too. It's a very enjoyable film, funny too.

I saw Good Will Hunting when it first came out and liked it a lot. But I thought Gone Girl was absolutely ridiculous! I watched it when it was on tv, and my sister and I had the exact same reaction to it. I still wonder if it was meant to be a satire, because only that could explain the plot.
