That is all true. And I also place the blame squarely on the shoulders of those TJLC/#Norbury type “fans” who blasted the show during Season 4 with loud rude remarks on social media that caused the impression that most of the fans of the show hated it.
For my money most of it was just some johnlockers whining about the fact that they didn’t get want they thought was the only important thing about the show - Johnlock and “the KISS”! They tried to disguise it with all these other “reasons” why the show had failed (they still do that on their blogs) and latched on to the representation issue saying the show had “queerbaited” but it is pretty clear to me that all this was just a faux justification for their big time disappointment in no Johnlock on the show.
It is just a matter of an empty can rattling the loudest and sucking up all the social media oxygen IMO.
Too bad because the 4th season deserved better.
:-))

Well, I hated the final episode too, but didn't care at all about Johnlock.

That’s why I said “most”.
I realise it wasn’t only Johnlockers who were doing the complaining about Season 4, but I found the most toxic ones who kept at it hammer and tong and went on to infinity about the representation issue were indeed coming from the TJLC side of things (even though they made long lists of other things that supposedly bothered them about the series). Those are the ones who shouted the loudest on social media and set a negative tone right from the get-go IMO.
I am sure there were others who weren’t JLers who didn’t enjoy the season. I am sure there were JLers who did. I am sure there were Sherlolly fans who didn’t like Season 4. And so on.
But to me the ones who made sure everyone on social media knew it was a complete pile of shit from start to finish, that wrote tweets and blogs about how the fanfic writers should be penning the next season, and that castigated M&G as complete incompetents at writing (and said they should never be allowed to write again for the “queer-baiting” they did on the show) are the people I am talking about. And they still out there in a fair amount of numbers (not the majority by any means but a good size chunk for sure) doing this very loudly on a daily basis. Just take a look on the BBC Sherlock fan forum - they still are going on about it.

Are people still going on about that? Jeez, it’s a tv show. Don’t like it, move along. There’s always more entertainment options to choose from, and more coming down the pike every day.

Sorry - I have to jump in here to defend my beloved Sherlock! It's the best tv show ever!
Ok, I'm done now.

That was a very lame defense, lol. There were parts of TST and TFP I didn’t like, but for me, the entire season was worth it for TLD (scruffy high Sherlock is soooo yummy) and the I love you scene. I suppose I could dig a bit deeper, but why bother? 😍😜

I agree, TLD was my 4th favorite episode of the entire series!

PBS in my area just re-aired S3 and S4, along with The Abominable Bride and all the behind-the-scenes videos. It was just so wonderful to relive it all!
I know that this thread isn't about Sherlock, but I wanted to mention something that occurred to me as I was watching those episodes for the millionth time. After Mary dies, John understandably flips out, blames Sherlock and stops speaking to him. He then begins having conversations with Mary. I wonder now if that's the way he handled Sherlock's death, too.
We saw John's reaction when Sherlock jumped from the roof and then died on the pavement. Then we saw him sitting alone in his chair at the apartment. And then we saw him talking to Sherlock at the cemetery. And, of course, that episode began with him talking about it with his therapist. But for the two years that Sherlock was dead, we didn't really see what John went through. I think that he probably did the same thing he did with Mary - he told everyone he was fine, he looked for someone to blame, he blamed himself, he isolated himself, and he continued to have conversations and arguments with Sherlock. With time and his therapist's help, he moved on and met Mary. I really think that in S4, Sherlock was finally able to see how horribly John must have handled his fake death years earlier. (There's that wonderful scene on the bridge in TLD, when Sherlock tells Faith that her life is not hers to take, and her death would only affect the people she left behind)

I love how much Sherlock grew in season 4. He really developed a level of compassion not seen in him before, and I agree, Mllemass, that he would think twice before doing something like that to John again. There was a nice little parallel with Sherlock being treated like a lab rat in TFP, and absolutely hating it, and him having put John through the same kind of terror in Hounds. Sherlock is really starting to learn about being human. It’s lovely.
Ps. Is it bad we just highjacked this thread? Should we move over to the Sherlock area if we keep discussing this?

To bring it back on topic, Benedict absolutely deserved this award for his work both in Sherlock and TCIT. He deserves every award, every time!
