Has anyone else seen this? I went to see it this afternoon. I had to drive an hour to get to a theatre that was showing it because I don't think it's in wide release.
I loved it. Vincent Van Gogh had such an interesting - and sad - life. The entire movie was hand-painted in the style of Van Gogh, and animated. It's amazing and gorgeous to watch!
Of course, it reminded me a lot of Benedict's Painted with Words. They should really show the two movies together as a double feature!

I recently watched Maurice Pialat’s Van Gogh. MUBI programmed a good number of his films!
It was very interesting in part because clearly the main plot was totally fabricated! It has his very realistic style and it’s a really good movie but if it were a modern film competing for Oscars it surely would be attacked for being ahistorical!
Great filmmakers don’t care for the truth!

I haven’t watched I but it sounds intriguing. Instead of commenting it I would name others Vincents, someone remember Martin Scorsese playing him in Kurosawa’s Dreams? Crazy! I really loved that movie when I was a teenager! Still but I haven’t watched it in years!

I went back to read some of the reviews for Loving Vincent. They're mainly positive, but one complaint that comes up is that we don't really learn anything more about Van Gogh than we already knew. It's another example of critics wanting a movie to be something other than what it is! Why on earth would this beautiful little animated movie reveal something previously unknown about Van Gogh's life? They're really missing the point. The movie is a look at the days leading up to his death. One of the reviews said it was sort of like CSI, which is a pretty good comparison! Although, with all the flashback scenes being in black and white, it reminds me more of Cold Case, which used to film their episodes that way.
So don't watch Loving Vincent hoping to solve the mystery of his death! Watch it to see his paintings come to life before your eyes, so that it feels like you've entered his world.

Plus it’s got Aidan Turner in it so what’s not to like? 😍
Sorry for lowering the intellectual tone of the discussion but it had to be said! 😀

Plus it’s got Aidan Turner in it so what’s not to like? 😍 Sorry for lowering the intellectual tone of the discussion but it had to be said! 😀 Yes, he was in it! I thought at first that the actors had only recorded their voices, but then I recognized Chris O'Dowd and I realized that the actors had actually acted out the movie before it was turned into animation. So somewhere out there must be a live-action version of it.
