I was so sad to hear about the death of David Cassidy! He was my first celebrity crush, and The Partridge Family was my first tv obsession. I must have been eight years old when my cousins from next door would come over to watch the show. We would lie on the floor in front of our black-and-white tv, on our stomachs, and squeal with delight the whole time it was on.
My first fan letter ever was to him. I guess I had read in a magazine that if you wrote to him, he would write back and send a picture. I vividly remember sitting at our kitchen table, writing my letter, and then giving it to my mother to mail. I never heard back from him, of course. Many years later it occurred to me that my mother probably never mailed it. She wouldn't have wasted a stamp on something so silly.
The first record our family ever had was the 45 of I Think I Love You. I have this crystal-clear memory of Christmas Day when I was eight. It was our turn to have Christmas, so my relatives were all over at our little house. There were six adults and eleven kids. My mother and my aunts were in the kitchen cooking. My father and my uncles were sitting at the kitchen table, playing poker. The kids were scattered around playing with their new Christmas presents. I had found a spot in the living room to plug in my new Easy Bake oven, so I was sitting on the floor watching my little cake bake. In the middle of all that chaos and noise, my sister and two cousins had put I Think I Love You on the record player, and were walking around the house singing along at the top of their lungs. I looked up from my little oven to watch them walk by, and I remember feeling pure joy. There aren't too many songs to make me feel joy like that one still does. I still have that record.
A few years later, I was at a friend's house and she showed me her records. She even had The Shopping Bag album that came with an actual shopping bag. I was so jealous!
This fall, our local tv station started re-airing a bunch of classic tv shows, including The Partridge Family. It's still as good as I remembered it!
