Hey, any Cricket experts here? When Valentine catches the ball at the Cricket match, why did everyone applaud? Is that a thing to catch the ball, like in baseball?

This Big Issue interview about filming Parade’s End was new to me! It was just before I discovered Benedict, so unfortunately I didn’t buy the magazine at the time. I think this is the interview where he “insults” Downton Abbey and then everyone threw a fit about it. Ha!

I probably read this at the time but I haven't re-read it. I think the "insulting" article was on Reader's Digest, tho. He was clearly joking but he had already made some more "discreet" comments that suggested he wasn't a fan! Lol It was considered heresy in certain quarters then! The male DA actors joked about being furious at him and even posed for one photo in which they supposedly were attacking him during the Emmys! I think Lily Tomlin was also in it and probably didn't understood what was happening with all those crazy British actors! BC sounded mortified on some interviews, tho. The tabloids were attacking him from all sides and taking a lot of out of context quotes by him. He is more reserved since then. EDITED, here is the photo EDITED I think Bryan Cranston is really enjoying the respected British theatre actors “fight” there!

I just read it and he is pretty nice about DA here! But yeah, those kind of very sincere comments got him in trouble with its fans and it exploded with the Reader’s Digest interview. I didn’t found the original article but here is a piece about “the polemic”! www.digitalspy.com/tv/a399632/benedict-cumberbatch-series-two-of-downton-was-fking-atrocious/I remember that in the original it was clear he was joking! Lol I mean he clearly didn’t liked the series but I think he was “exaggerating” his “disgust” LOL The context was just playful and that was his error then : being playful and sincere with the press when everyone thought he was an hyper serious and abrasive “know it all” character like Sherlock! I remember journalists writing on Twitter how cool, nice and, surprisingly, foul-mouthed he was in real life during a press conference just to later write negative pieces in which they took his “out of context” quotes and made him look bad around that time. Sadly, he obviously become more discreet since then and, for good, because the culture is even more literal minded and idiotic now but it’s boring to read articles in which big names can’t be completely themselves because someone out there would take something out of context and make a big fuss about nothing! About DA, I remember his friend Dan Stevens gave an interview in which he was also clearly joking but called BC names for daring to “attack” his beloved series. The series fans went ballistic “supporting” him against the “evil” man. I think Hugh Bonneville did something similar, too. The “rivalry” was so over the top that it was clear just a joke for the DA gang but tabloids and Tumblr really thought it was real! Or at least, presented as such with simple minds believing it. Poor BC because he just got too popular by then and seemed so nice until then that now it was cool to hate him! Of course, it was just a moment in time! Also poor Stevens who quit DA a few months later (it was clear he wasn’t a big fan neither! Lol) and then received a lot of hate by the then toxic DA fandom! EDITED He also got in trouble for calling Cameron “flatulent”! Lol EDITED You know what’s funny? Nowadays someone read an old interview on something like Playboy and then post it on Twitter saying how great this or that star was for being bitchy about something or someone decades ago and how modern stars aren’t like that! Of course, they aren’t like that! You would eat them alive on social media! Lol And ironically, I don’t think no one would be offended nowadays for BC saying that DA was soap operish and Sir Tom Stoppard’s Parade’s End being superior! It still could be seen like bad manners to openly calling your friends series “atrocious” but they all are, you know, friends and were clearly joking! He was also right about Cameron! Lol

He also, when accepting an award around that time (GQ?), referenced DA, calling it “some such shite.” That was the interview where he said “see you in the loo!” I kind of miss those days when he just ran his mouth, overshared, and was sort of a mess in public. Ah, when we all were young. 😂

I actually think the GQ award was much later, doesn’t? There was a massive backlash against him during the press tour for Parade’s End in 2012 but, by then, he had began his Hollywood career so the British press just couldn’t stop him! The article posted here actually mentions he was debuting in Hollywood and that he was lucky with his TV career but wanted to try the difficult task of going to Hollywood like Tom Hardy, James McAvoy, Fassbender, Andrew Garfield, Hiddleston and others. It’s insane but he was late to the game!
Actually, he and Hall won a lot of critics awards for PE but I’m sure he was ignored by BAFTA that year because the backlash against the “posh” kid. He was later nominated for the Emmy (but not Hall) so it, again, didn’t matter. He was still “only” a TV actor but pretty respected outside the little island.
EDITED It was from 2014 but yeah, you can see they are good friends and how they tease each other!

BC's dad was even on that season of DA. He had a small part as a judge.

BC’s dad was in PE, too. “This isn’t our own chutney!” 😂
