This is actually a very reasonable answer to why there are not female directors nominees:

And that's why I had a problem with #OscarsoWhite campaign. It's NOT about the awards. Actually all these awards are next to insignificant. Almost no one cares or watch them. It's about the system. There is a huge problem inside Hollywood companies not hiring enough female directors and not appropriately promoting minority stories that had shown in the past to be successful but that campaign didn't care for that! They just attacked the Academy, represented at the time by a black woman, by the way, for not nominating certain black actors. It was more about sounding progressive instead of wanting real change!
The irony is that it seems campaigners are now pressuring to include individuals who in other circumstances wouldn't be even discussed when talking about awards: Wonder Woman? I doubt but imagine if Patty Jenkins is nominated to an Oscar for a comic book movie? Of course there would be a backlash against female directors! Probably it's ridiculous but it's not normal to nominate comic book movies directors and would seem like a underserved concession (her movie was a major hit and that was enough. She doesn't actually need the Academy as other male comic book directors didn't need it before her). Women doesn't need that! They need more opportunities to show what they can do!
It’s a much bigger issue than BAFTA or the Golden Globes,” said Kate Kinnimont, chief executive of Women in Film & TV. “It’s more about the culture we live in than a particular festival or organization. If there are only 7% of women directing films, then if you are choosing five, the chances of [nominations] are slim. It’s really about how women are perceived on the business side.”
