Speaking of University Challenge, I recently discovered that Starter for 10 was written by David Nicholls, who wrote the Patrick Melrose screenplay. I loved Starter for 10! He wrote both the novel and screenplay (I didn't even know that Starter for 10 was a novel!). And I knew he wrote the novel One Day (which I loved), but I didn't know that he also wrote the screenplay (which I wasn't crazy about). So I now have a good indication of how he is able to mix serious subject matter with humour, and I'm looking forward to Patrick Melrose more than ever!

I haven’t read his books but by his own admission Patrick Melrose is much more heavy stuff! He had adapted complex books before tho.: Tess of the d'Urbervilles, Far from the Madding Crowd and Great Expectations.

Yes, I imagine Melrose is more serious than Watts, lol. But he (Nicholls) does know how to handle all kinds of material, so the outlook is good. Very good.
I still miss Patrick Watts, tho. I want a sequel. 🙏🏻

I grew up loving the original movie with Julie C. and Alan B. And when I heard there had been a remake of it I was very aprehensive. But after I had watched the new version I just couldn’t help myself - I loved the newer version even more!!! It was so well done. And Nicholls’ adaptation was a big part of that! :-))

I love David Nicholls books and adore the “Starter for Ten” movie. I didn’t like the film version of “One Day” but I think that was a very difficult story to get across in that medium. The long time span of their relationship and shifting circumstances truncated into 90 minutes didn’t really work for me.
Really looking forward to Melrose though. I think the mini series format should suit it.
