I like that the Reichenbach Fall scene has beaten the Dead Parrot sketch in the "most iconic" section of this poll. 😂

It's wonderful that despite all the recent efforts of TJLC people, Sherlock's popularity worldwide remains high. And not just kind of popular - miles ahead of the next contender! Among some pretty stiff competition. :-))

We always knew there were a lot of Sherlock fans out there – but apparently there are enough, it turns out, for the consulting detective to be named the most popular BBC character ever in an international survey.
Benedict Cumberbatch’s modern take on Sherlock Holmes beat out other famous heroes like Doctor Who‘s the Doctor and Idris Elba’s John Luther to the top spot – and by a pretty significant margin too. Have a look at the top ten list below:
Sherlock Holmes – Sherlock (29.7%) The Doctor – Doctor Who (17.6%) John Luther – Luther (12.4%) Basil Fawlty – Fawlty Towers (11.8%) The Stig – Top Gear (8.2%) Patsy Stone – Absolutely Fabulous (8.1%) Edmund Blackadder – Blackadder (7.4%) Hyacinth Bucket – Keeping Up Appearances (6.1%) Geraldine Granger – The Vicar of Dibley (5.8%) The Daleks – Doctor Who (5.6%) More than 7000 people voted in the poll from BBC Worldwide Showcase which surveyed viewers from Australia, France, the USA, Germany, India, Japan and Mexico. Mexican voters were apparently the most ardent Sherlock fans.
It’s no real surprise that Sherlock claimed the top spot, as the show is famously a global phenomenon – airing in 240 countries and making an international star out of Benedict Cumberbatch.
Speaking of which, Cumberbatch himself had this to say about Sherlock’s win:
“I’m honoured to hear that my portrayal of Sherlock has been internationally recognised as viewers’ favourite BBC TV character. Who would have thought a high functioning sociopath could be so popular with people all over the world?”

What’s more, Sherlock also topped the poll for best BBC scene. Sherlock’s tragic leap of St Bart’s Hospital nabbed number one – again by a very comfortable margin.
Sherlock falling to his ‘death’ – Sherlock (26.0%) The ‘Dead Parrot’ sketch – Monty Python (14.1%) The Doctor’s regeneration – Doctor Who (13.1%) The Ballroom scene with Prince Andrei and Natasha – War and Peace (12.6%) Mr Darcy emerging from the lake – Pride and Prejudice (12.5%) Basil Fawlty attacking his car – Fawlty Towers (11.5%) Sir David Attenborough and the Gorillas – Life on Earth (10.2%) David Brent dancing – The Office (9.5%) When the murderer comes from out of the bed – Luther (6.53%) “Don’t tell him Pike!”- Dad’s Army (6.50%) Sherlock‘s worldwide fans may be disappointed to know that the show is currently in limbo, as the cast and crew are unsure if they will get to make another season. That said, there are many rumours to the contrary.

Of course, as soon as this story was posted on Twitter, the usual idiots crawled out of the woodwork to share their opinions: -Arthur Conan Doyle should take the credit, not Benedict. -The people voted for S1-S3, not for S4 which was terrible. -Benedict should get all the credit, and not the terrible writing. -We're still waiting for the secret fourth episode where Sherlock comes out of the closet. -Why haven't they let Sherlock have a relationship like they promised us? -I used to like Sherlock, but I can't get through S4 because it's so bad. -I don't watch it. I like Endeavour.

Of course, as soon as this story was posted on Twitter, the usual idiots crawled out of the woodwork to share their opinions OMG! This makes me so thankful that I am not on Twitter, Tumblr or any other such thing. You got to hand it to the TJLCs - they are consistent and persistent in their rage and stupidity. They really must have no concept of how this makes them appear to the rest of the world. :-))

Who are you following, Mllemass? I don't follow anyone crazy, if that's what you're thinking! I think most of those comments were replies to the tweet from the official Sherlock Twitter account. They also might have been from the BBC tweet. I block anyone who says anything mean about Benedict, or is just nasty in general. I don't need to be an audience for their nonsense.

A lot of the craziest BC/SH hater, TJLC, stuff you can avoid, but it is almost impossible to stay away from it completely.
Sometimes I pick up on it by reading comments on various sites that have BC articles. Sometimes on magazine sites, tumblr blogs or twitter accounts that I glance at, there are notes from SH haters where they make their snide comments and then if they are called on it, they usually act all innocent like they have never heard of any hate being thrown SH's way. Either that or they start ranting and proselytising trying to convince everyone right there and then that Sophie is evil and BC is faking his marriage and child.
For the TJLCers they tend to stay in their own bubble but you still get whiffs of their own personal brand of "disappointment" now and again especially on Twitter.
I love the way you put it Mllemass - "I don't need to be an audience for their nonsense." To me it is like dealing with a skunk - I can handle it if one wanders into my yard now and again (recognise its foul smell and warn others against direct contact), but it doesn't mean I want to invite it into my house and then be surprised when it does what is basic to its nature and goes off.
Anyway I am completely chuffed that Sherlock won this poil! Well, deserved IMO - for all the episodes!
:-))
